Title: 6 Months
Post by pgambr on 10/10/13 at 17:43:32

I have finished a 6 month project fixing up my old 06 S40.  It has been quite a journey for someone like me with no mechanical background of any kind.  My goal was to keep it road worthy, but I ended up with a real nice bike.  I encountered many problems and headaches for which I had no idea how to approach.  I have read many many threads and posted a few for some items that I had really had trouble with.  With help from many of the site members and the site as a whole I sincerely thank you.

Over the past six months I fixed or replaced:
Learned how to disassemble & reassemble a whole lot of motorcycle parts
Painted header pipe & muffler (took a couple attempts to get the paint to stick)
Replaced numerous bolts & nuts  (Fastenal can save you many headaches)
Corrected a bad front end wobble (TKAT fork brace did wonders)
Front brake pads
Head light & turn signal bulbs (created a short and inadvertently fixed one)
New grips
New seat
New front fender
New tires & tubes (had the shop do this)
Cleaned carburetor (Had someone help me with this)

Misc thoughts:
Clymer manual is a good resource for people like me who don’t know a whole lot
Picked up a Saddleman BR 1800 for road trips (Can serve as a comfortable back rest as well)
Chilhowee tank brawl is a nice touch

I have a real nice ride for an 06 that I plan to have for many years down the road.  I also had a couple offers for people who wanted to buy it as well.   Thanks again, best regards.

When you wrench on your own bike the project is never done,  but its so gratifying to reach a point of completion from a certain goal.     8-)

Maybe so; although the only thing I was trying to prove is if one applies the knowledge of the website and the expertise of it’s members even an entry level mechanic such as myself can produce some good results.  What kind of pictures do you feel would benefit the site?  There are plenty of pictures of stuff I did.

The items I can’t recall seeing:
The cap head screws I used inside the back fender to hold the side rails in place so the new back tire doesn’t rub against the bolts.
The TKAT, but a dog bone is a dog bone
Chilhowee tank bra

If you’re really interested I can take a couple pics.
Best regards,
