Title: Chrome rocker covers?
Post by busterboy on 10/09/13 at 10:57:20

I have seen a couple of posts about removing these, has any done it? and can you post a pic?

Is there any reason to keep them on, other than aesthetics?

Thanks!

No other purpose. If you remove them make sure to keep the top left corner hole with another screw tight in there, that one is useful.

Pics? Okay...

Right cover removed and thrown away...

Left cover painted to match the cylinder and head, too lazy to pull the actual rocker cover (the upper cylinder head section) and the lower head to swap one bolt for a shorter version...

The apehangers have been swapped back to low bars. And if you are wondering, yes, that IS a functional front drum. And no, you shouldn't do that to yours... I'm nuts, been riding since 1987 and still hate disc brakes.

Let's say I want to follow your advise, what does the wheel come out of? Direct fit?

T500 2 stroke street parallel twin. With either an extremely early TLS GT750 (3 months in 1969) brake plate or a CB/CL (sloper era) TLS brake plate. But to run a functional front drum, you'll need to relocate the wiring from your handlebar, isn't a lever set currently made that will clear the switchbox/throttle housing. So you will also need a 1964 or earlier HD style throttle assembly. Oh, you'll also need 11 5/8" i.d. fender washers to make axle spacer stacks...

Mine has been off the road since late 2010... Just tracked down a perch and lever set this week and got them ordered. Need a new throttle assembly, mine failed after 6 or 7 years. Might have the wiring modifications done in the next couple weeks. All because the decompression relay failed and fried a bunch of my harness... and I hate disc brakes...

My fender is long gone and handle bar is not stock either. Wonder what other wheel I can fit in there, also how fat a front tire I could get away with. Maybe a winter project :)

110/90 on the stock width hoop. Mine is a 90/90-19, responds faster than a bulge-mobile 100 or 110, since even the factory hoop is overtaxed with a 100/90-19.

Look at Honda and early Suzuki for wire wheels, small to medium KZ and GS for cast wheels. Savage is either 15mm or 16mm axle, can't remember what exactly, but a 5/8 inch open end wrench is just a touch loose on the axle shaft.
