Title: Seeking ideas... Post by Serowbot on 10/08/13 at 23:53:11 My original title for this thread was... "Man, seeking firm 10", preferably black"... (I thought better of it) :-?... (almost too funny to pass up... ...Almost)... Ahem!... I've rigged a tailbag for my Sporty... I didn't want to scratch anything, so I bent up this bicycle bottle rack to support a bag over the rear fender, and I currently have two slats of bamboo venetian blinds riveted inside the bag for support... which I then covered with a Peter Piper Pizza box lid... (you know your idea sucks, when a cardboard Pizza box lid helps)... .... so,.. this is a temporary solution (I always start with sucky solutions, because I think as I go)... So,... I'm looking for a material 10" wide, by about 10"... that is firm enough to retain a few rivets... but flexible enough to be curved or bent to shape the inside of my bag... I would prefer black, to match the bag... I recall some black reenforcing material in a saddlebag that would be perfect... ... but, I want something cheap... Milk carton cheap... but a bit stronger,... and black... I'll add some pics tomorrow....(skeeters was eating me alive just as I was making final fitting of my Frankenbag)... Any ideas?... :-?... |

Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by babyhog on 10/09/13 at 05:58:44 Go to the craft shop (JoAnn's, etc) They have all kinds of stuff that probably would work. Here's a piece of needlework canvas, may or may not hold a rivet, but maybe a zip tie? I'm pretty sure these come in colors. $1.49, cheaper than a gallon of milk... lol http://www.joann.com/darice-stiff-plastic-canvas-7-count-12inx18in-clear/1971233.html#q=darice+canvas&start=2 http://demandware.edgesuite.net/sits_pod21/dw/image/v2/AAMM_PRD/on/demandware.static/Sites-JoAnn-Site/Sites-joann-product-catalog/default/v1381304823779/images/hi-res/19/1971233.jpg?sw=556&sh=680&sm=fit |
Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by ToesNose on 10/09/13 at 06:14:30 +1 to BabyHog- Joanne's, Michael's, Hobby Lobby or any such craft/hobby store will have lots of materials that will fit your needs on the cheap. Too bad you aren't near by I just acquired some aluminum from a sign display that would work perfectly :-? |
Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by Dave on 10/09/13 at 06:24:03 Those plastic signs on wire supports that people stick along side the road work great for some things. They come in many colors and they have two flat faces with a center core of vertical holes. When people stick them in my yard without asking....I repurpose them to hold nuts, bolts and small parts while I spray paint them, or for liners in cardboard boxes I am mailing and need some reinforcement and padding, or put them on my work bench when I am using paint stripper on a part. |
Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by verslagen1 on 10/09/13 at 07:17:40 guess what day it is.... guess what day it is.... bot, bot, bot... I know you can hear me what day is it? yup... it's that day election time! those boards are already popping up all over. go pick yourself one. |

Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by old_rider on 10/09/13 at 09:27:51 For riveting stuff to canvas or any other cloth-like material always use some small washers under your crimp side (if your rivet pack didn't come with them), it will help hold the rivet crimp side from pulling through. |
Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by Serowbot on 10/09/13 at 09:42:23 Great ideas, guys... The bookbag reinforcement is just what I was trying to think of... I'm going to look through some old bags... Also,.. those divider panels in some suitcases... :)... Here's a few pics of the bag mount... http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt82/serowbot/IMG_0167_zpsfa970882.jpg http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt82/serowbot/IMG_0162_zpse883f51c.jpg http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt82/serowbot/IMG_0165_zpsf44eace8.jpg |
Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by Dave on 10/09/13 at 09:45:18 I also saw that 3M makes some kind of a spray on chip guard that you can just peel off when you are done with it. That could work to protect the fender if you did attach a bag that rested on the fender. |

My first thought was about the commercial with the camel walking through the office asking what day it is... Happier than a camel on hump day! And today just so happens to be Hump Day! ;D Hey Bot, did you say this thing is going inside the bag? (thinking why does color matter if it goes inside....) What day is garbage pickup in your neighborhood? I could find all kinds of stuff laying by the neighbors trash when they put it out on the curb for pickup... (know a guy that used to leave his house half an hour early on trash day, just so he could drive slow past everybody else's garbage) |
Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by MMRanch on 10/09/13 at 11:13:38 Hay Bot I used alumiumn 1x.125 to frame mine ! Works great and stout too. ;) |
Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by gerald.hughes on 10/09/13 at 11:35:19 Ok First off, I admit that I sam not a putterer, nor an inventor, like most of the people on this site. But, for my taste, I think that a Sporty looks a lot more together, and has a lot more carrying capacity with a set of Leatherlike side cases, than it does with a lot of different bags mounted everywhere. Of course, I know that Bot likes to play, so he should do what he likes with his bike. It more or less keeps him out of trouble. |

Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by prechermike on 10/10/13 at 04:55:10 If you can't find a book bag or suitcase divider we have some flimsy three ring binder notebooks that would probably work. I thought of that yesterday after I left. I too like taking junk and making something useful out of it. |
Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by Trippah on 10/10/13 at 12:42:28 If you don't find what you're looking for at Michael's, at least you can find comforting gals (the ratio is always about (100 gals to 1 guy) and often the guy is well, lets say not in the gal market. ;D Of course most of the women are matronly and carry long needles..so venture forth at your own risk. |

Me TOO,, Sadly, I have at least as much experience with taking something useful & converting it to junk,,Not without the expenditure of time & effort, mind you.. & I keep telling people Im easy to get along with,,but they dont get it,, I keep hearing back from them how easy I am to get along without,, |
Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by old_rider on 10/10/13 at 22:45:22 You could also visit a plumbing store and pick up some 10" diameter or greater pvc pipe. I found some scrap at a lumberyard and they gave it to me, I cut two pieces 6" long and slid them into a round "T" bag I had on my supermoto. |
Title: Re: Seeking ideas... Post by Midnightrider on 10/11/13 at 00:19:20 do you have a sissy bar and how tall is it?I have a touring bag I gave over a $100 for but you have to have a sissy bar to use it< If I'm ever able to ride again my Baby Ninja doesn't have a sissy bar and I bought another bag for it. measure your sissy bar and we'll figure out if it will work. If it will I'll ship it to you for shipping cost> The way my health is I will probably never ride again. My Dr warned me if I ever went down I would bleed to death they have my blood so thin. Its going to take a taller sissy bar than whats on the Savage. |
