Title: Ideas for attaching moldings to the tank.
Post by arteacher on 09/25/13 at 09:36:37

I am having my tank chromed and want to attach knee pads and retro Suzuki tank badges to it. The knee pads I put on the tank I have now were attached with body molding tape, which pulled away from the pads a bit where they curve over the top. I can't find body molding tape in sheets. The Boulevard badges were put on with something that looked like putty.
Any advice?

Go to a BodyShop supply house. A paint store that sells automotive paints.
Ask for the latest in sticking moldings back on. I know 3M has a product thats so good they put the sheathing on a skyscraper with it. In UL testing it was compared to rivets,, Its also just a bit spendy,, like several bucks a foot. But adhesive technology is far advanced since the 70's, when we used a double sided tape. That stuff lasted for years,.,

I have yet to find a post that shows a link to purchasing Knee Pads for attaching to the tank.

Any help in finding some that fit the S40 tank would be appreciated.

I forget who makes them, but they sell some that you can trim to your specifications and it has adhesive to make it stick.  They were pretty experiences though, about $45.

I've gladly paid more than$45.00 for a pretty experience.

Yep, and the carpet runners also work fine.  You might also be able to use tank pads from early Honda, Triumph, etc. - but you will most likely have to grind some rubber off the back for whatever attachment method was used on the stock tank......so you can have a flat surface to glue to the tank.  Most of the contact cement type products are rubbery and require you to apply the adhesive to both surfaces prior to mounting, and you can peel or rub off any adhesive that might extend out from the edges of the pad.

Contact Adhesive, 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive and similar products should work - the important thing is to use an adhesive that does not soften when the black rubber pad gets hot in sunlight.

You might also be able to use the foam tape that is used to mount badges and molding on automobiles.

Problem solved: I applied body molding tape to the two knee pads with the protective tape still on and clamped them together with 4 c-clamps done tight and left them for a week, so the tape would adhere thoroughly to the pads. I peeled the protective tape off and stuck the pads to the tank and pressed them on with a small roller. They haven't lifted at all.

I still have some 2 sided tape from when I worked at a shop. Im pretty sure its a little over 30 y/o,, BUT,, last I needed a little piece, it worked.. Todays adhesives are SO much better.. Windows in skyscrapers are held in with a tape that allows them to shrink and grow with the temp, yet not fall off...UHHMayzing..and EX Pen Sieve. I wanna say Digger posted a link to a Super Duper roll O stikkum,, I Thot I wanted some, till I saw the price..

When playing with thick rubber stuff and wanting it to stay on a compound curved surface, of course grinding the rubber to fit at least Kinda is important,, and some heat (Okay,, lets call it like it is,, Pain Compliance)
Now,, the tank,, Hoo,, boy,, Talk about wanting ALL the wax gone,, How did you get the tank surface prepared>? Ive heard Dawn dish soap is just the bomb for ripping all the oils and waxes off a car, and Not recommended for washing a car, at all..

I generally use 99% isopropel (sp?) alcohol to clean stuff prior to painting or gluing.
