Title: Boots
Post by pgambr on 09/14/13 at 18:16:01

Not a practical real question, but someone maybe able to offer some insight.  Why do motorcycle harness boots have the ring with the leather straps that go around the ankle?  It seems like you would want smooth leather that couldn't get snagged on anything?  Best regards.

It's just a styling thing. Back in the 1960/70s a lot of us wore "engineer" boots that had a strap and buckle on them. We picked those because they were real sturdy and came in heights up to 14".

Sorry, I meant to put this in the café section.

On good boots there is a buckle instead of a ring, so you can adjust the tension the boot vamp places on your ankle and foot crown. Boots with the ring are a fashion statement. Boots like the Texas Highway Patrol motor officers use w/o a buckle/strap are custom fit, very expensive, and worth every penny. If you have not seen those particular boots, think Nazi jackboots, same pattern, both trace their histories to English cavalry boots.

You are throwing money away on harness/Dingo boots. Go to a tack shop and buy a good pair of English style hunter/jumper boots. A few hundred dollars, but they last for decades if you take care of them. Or order a set of Chippewa 17 inch rise jack boots. Steel toed, steel sole shanks. That would be THESE...http://www.bootbarn.com/Chippewa-Men%27s-Engineer-Steel-Toe-Motorcycle-Boots/1005552,default,pd.html?start=10&cgid=Motorcycle%20Boots&prefn1=gender&prefv1=Men I wear this type, but mine were on close out for either $80 or $120 at the last bike shop I worked for.

I was always told the boots with the rings were an extra addition for ankle bone protection in a slide, not for a replacement for where the buckles were placed. The first rings were held in place by a wrap-around metal clamp that was riveted to the strap, but that was too expensive so they used the strap to hold it in place instead, which defeats the purpose of ankle bone protection as the leather will strip off in a lay down slide anyway and the ring will simply fling off the boot instead of sliding with it if it had a metal clamp holding it on.
Not sure if I can find a picture but i'll see.

Thanks for the insight.  The engineering boots are real nice, just a bit expensive.  I never really thought that the might actually have used a rivot to attach the straps.

just put on flip flops, I mean if you aren't going to buy motorcycle boots of some kind, might as well be comfortable ::)
