Why do motorcycle harness boots have the ring with the leather straps that go around the ankle? It seems like you would want smooth leather that couldn't get snagged on anything? Best regards. |

Boots with the ring are a fashion statement. Boots like the Texas Highway Patrol motor officers use w/o a buckle/strap are custom fit, very expensive, and worth every penny. If you have not seen those particular boots, think Nazi jackboots, same pattern, both trace their histories to English cavalry boots. You are throwing money away on harness/Dingo boots. Go to a tack shop and buy a good pair of English style hunter/jumper boots. A few hundred dollars, but they last for decades if you take care of them. Or order a set of Chippewa 17 inch rise jack boots. Steel toed, steel sole shanks. Title: Re: Boots Post by old_rider on 09/16/13 at 09:18:37 I was always told the boots with the rings were an extra addition for ankle bone protection in a slide, not for a replacement for where the buckles were placed. The first rings were held in place by a wrap-around metal clamp that was riveted to the strap, but that was too expensive so they used the strap to hold it in place instead, which defeats the purpose of ankle bone protection as the leather will strip off in a lay down slide anyway and the ring will simply fling off the boot instead of sliding with it if it had a metal clamp holding it on. Not sure if I can find a picture but i'll see. |
