Title: Recommendation for light helmet for my wify...
Post by Afan on 09/13/13 at 14:27:13

My wife just started to ride with me (2 up). Since I'm beginner too I insist she wears a helmet. She has some problems with her neck and 3-4 helmets she tried she would always complain they are to heavy. Except plastic cereal bowl, any suggestions?

don't say it....

you got 2 options...
get a hair cut (head lighter)
or spend big bucks for a carbon fiber helmet.

She's working on her neck for last 4 years, w/o big success. Tons of different docs. Nobody knows what's going on. :(
Right now the best thing we found was one HF.
I'm assuming there is some kind of titanium/platinum/aluminum/cobalt/deluxe prima comfort helmet for few hundred bucks I can't afford. :D

Yup,.. the carbon fibers are light... but... it ain't the weight of the helmet...
Even with a light one,.. your neck muscles will have to fight the wind...

Maybe she's just not ready for biking quite yet...

Trials motorycle helmets are extremely light.  They are made for falling down at walking speeds however....and are just a bit more rugged than a bicycle helmet. They most likely don't have any safety rating for road use.

If her neck is that fragile Id think any helmet would be a danger. There really are medical situations that make riding more hazardous than acceptable.

I hate wearing a helmet, but I am in a Nanny State.  I have a Daytona 1/2 helmet: http://www.daytonahelmets.com/page_4297_69/d.o.t.-daytona-skull-cap-wo-visor-hi-gloss-b-p4297

Unlike any other helmet manufacturer, Dayton Helmets posts the actual physical dimensions and weights.  If any other manufacturer was actually lighter they would be willing to post their own weights.

Also,.. keep in mind, your wearing a helmet, just in case you go down...
If the neck is too weak to wear one,.. it's far too weak to handle an accident...

You can buy a foam neck ring to prevent the helmet from over rotating the neck in a crash...
They aren't comfortable,...
You'll see lots of Jr. MX'rs wearing them....

Lightweight comfortable AND street legal? Good luck, I've never found such a helmet.

Your average motorcycle helmet is a headache inducing pressure cooker.

Leatherup.com offers tons of different helmets at
different prices.
I got my Pink one there. It is a flip up full face with
sun visor.
It was cheap and is light weight.
It is a Hawk brand and again cheap and light.
Does not keep out the noise like my flip up
HJG..Then again that is an expensive helmet.

Have you asked the Dr. about her wearing any kind
of helmet with her neck problems?
I am just wondering if he or she would recommend a
certain type.. keep us posted. :) kim

Look into Euro-spec helmets Afan, they tend to be lighter and considerably better made than Asian built helmets. You can still find American made lids, but they are pricey, a decent 1/2 helmet is going to be over $100.

Don't buy a Chinese or Vietnamese made helmet, regardless of how attractive the price is. They tend to crack/shatter with even a light impact.

I have helmets from Buco (USA made), unknown (Colorado made police spec), KBC (absolute garbage), HJC (tolerable, just) and a couple others that I have no idea who made them, but they are imported.

I'd just as soon have the lightest novelty helmet available if I'm forced to wear one. Or a D.O.T. legal from Biltwell, which are almost as light as novelty lid, but have good padding.

Your average new style helmet is 3-4 lbs. My wife just bought an HJC modular helmet (full face that flips up) with an internal drop-down sunvisor that weighs 4lbs. If she can't take 3 lbs on her head putting a downpressure  on her neck then you are not going to get her on a bike.

Even the lightest of the light are about 2.75 lbs, anything less than that isn't safety approved.

My  concern is that if she cant tolerate the weight of a helmet, whats gonna happen if she is in a situation where the helmet is saving her head? Can her neck tolerate falling with a helmet strapped to her head?

My Daytona half helmet is 1.52 lbs.  The CHP accepts it as being "safety approved."  It meets or exceeds the DOT requirements.

Which is why I use primary sources, for a Daytona Helmet : http://www.daytonahelmets.com/page_4297_69/d.o.t.-daytona-skull-cap-wo-visor-hi-gloss-b-p4297 and http://www.daytonahelmets.com/page_1458_66/d.o.t.-daytona-skull-cap-wo-visor-grey-carbon-fibe

I weighed my helmet and it is close to the claimed 1.54 pounds.  Dennis Kirk has some problems.  They sent me a windscreen for my scooter that could not fit in the box -- so they folded it in half.

Yeah I went to the Daytona site but couldn't find the weight there, thought i'd look on other sites, guess Daytona hasn't seen the DenisKirk is misrepresenting their product. Maybe someone should point that out to them..

Folded In half?? wow....  >:(

No, it is a thing about selling an product you don't have in stock and keeping the customer's money for four months.  See images (http://www.andruschak.net/image/DennisKirk/).

I got the helmet from Dennis Kirk via eBay, best price.  The tracking info said it was delivered, I never got it. Dennis Kirk sent a second.  You win some, lose some, some are rained out.  I will still deal with them -- they have a brick and mortar and have to be honest since anyone can make a Molotov Cocktail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molotov_cocktail).

Dayton Helmet's site (http://www.daytonahelmets.com/page_1458_66/d.o.t.-daytona-skull-cap-wo-visor-grey-carbon-fibe), click on [Dimensions].  The $150 Carbon Fiber helmet is only 0.04 pounds heavier than the $56 helmet I bought.
I hate helmets, but this one is the light, not too expensive, and the curve does not try to lift the helmet at speed.

Yup, there it is, thanks.... i'm sure the OP will like to see those figures, they have XS too!  my wife is now wanting to find a dealer that carries those helmets, me too! I have a herniated C5 and the heavier helmets make my neck crack after about ten minutes of leaning forward, LOL, if I have my mouth open you can actually hear it POP!
