You can be shot and killed by an unloaded gun.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHsX7STHqNg  We have a new law of physics in Sacramento

Go to any gun range...
"All weapons must be pointed downrange at all times"...

I'll bet half of all gun deaths in the US are from "unloaded" guns...
"While cleaning his gun", "playing with an unloaded gun"... "didn't think it was loaded"...

For a period of 10 or 15 years, I was an avid shooter...
500 to 1,000 rounds per week... mostly .22... but including many others... (between me and my buddy, probably 250,000 rounds)...
During that time, there were, 4 or 5 incidents of accidental fire....
Every single one, was with an empty gun...
Fortunately...every single one went downrange, into a safe backstop...
No, not fortunately,... actually, and intentionally...
Instinctively...

Much like rider training...
Habitual behavior and training is in effect when unexpected things happen...

We play with big boy toys... they need to be respected...
;)...

Be safe...

Good post Sow. Its just the way she said it, like it was true. I've never had a misfire but someday I'll get to go hunting with Dikk Cheyney.

I've only EVER had one accidental discharge.
And I know they want to pretend there is no such thing as an AD and replace every discharge with negligent discharge.
I had an old 12 ga. H&R Topper I bought for 30 bucks. Mismatched wood, looked like Hell. I just wanted to see if it would shoot.
Loaded a shell, walked onto the range, pulled the hammer back, brought it up about 3 feet and it discharged.
But, per safety guidelines, I was pointed downrange instead of looking down the barrel, or showing someone the business end.
Poor thing was packed with gunk, grease, grand funk. Once cleaned and lightly oiled it functioned well. Still has mismatched wood. I never got around to sanding and staining it.
