So I had to reseal the head cover and found this little guy on my garage floor...

Any input as to what/where it was from? It has the old copper RTV gasket on it so I'm assuming it's from there but I never remembered there being a rubber gasket in there? I sweep the floor regularly and this has been my only project for the week so it's not a leftover from my other bikes...

I haven't started the savage yet incase this is a critical section that'll start spewing oil or w/e fluid it was designed to repel.

I hate to tell you this... yes, you need to redo that job.

That odd shaped oring keeps rtv out of an import oil path leading to the cam journals. w/out it, rtv will flow into it and block it.

The picture shows it round in the parts list......but it is part number 9 and fits around the right rear stud and locating dowel.

That o-ring is not well captured, sits in a cavity on the underside of the valve cover. If it falls out while you're trying to fit the cover to the head, you'll never know. It's not the best design, or at least not designed for amateurs. And it's just a crazy ass cross drill for the oil path. dam bean counters.

I'm in the middle of an engine rebuild, and you've struck fear into my heart. I may have to look at it to see if there's a more reliable way for us dumbasses.

Yep, had the same thing happen to me once. My fix is to paint a light film of very tacky permatex aviation gasket on the rubber seal, let it air dry, clean any oil residue out of the recess in the head then "glue" the seal in place. It then holds nicely upside down while you get the head back in place.

I always used thick grease for things like that.

OK, I call balderdash on myself.
I looked it over closely and that little pocket is useless.
it connects to nothing. the oring is useless. there's a hollow alignment pin to keep the oil in where it's supposed to be.
fok the oring, fill the pocket up with rtv and you're good to go.

anybody else have a different opinion?

As little faith as have in engineers...that 0-ring looks like it does something...

I can't recall ever seeing one that didn't...

PS... I like that puzzle ring, KS...
...(I always figured,.. if I'm gonna' carry something... it should do something)...
