Title: 2006 S40 vs 1983 GS550
Post by Afan on 09/02/13 at 14:01:22

Friend of mine is selling 1983 GS 550. It needs some work, mostly because he failed to winterizing the bike for last 3 years. He would give it to me for very fair price.
Now, I have 2006 S40 and I wonder is there any good reason to take 1983 GS 550 over 2006 S40? If I got it well, GS 550 is 4 cylinder, 50 HP machine while S40 is one cylinder, 32 HP machine. Means, the GS 550 should be stronger, more powerful and faster machine?

Thanks for any info...

Well it's certainly a personal preference as far as which to choose. First off is it a GS 550 L or GS 550 M? The L is half way between a standard and cruiser style bike while the M is the original Katana which is half way between a standard and sport bike, they will both handle and feel different.  Regardless to the style YES the 1983 GS 550 is stronger, more powerful and faster! It's also 23 years older and apparently neglected   :-?  Also the GS 550 is a four cylinder with four carbs, a neglected bike with 4 carbs is a lot of cleaning and tuning LOL are you game for that?

Lots of pros and cons, not quite Apples to Oranges....maybe Gala Apples to Delicious Reds?!   ;D

Ya just havent lived till youve cleaned & tuned 4 carbs to run together.

I dont like heavy bikes & I simply will not own a carbureted bike w/ more than 2 cylinders,  unless someone wants to Give it to me,
