Title: 6000 mile mark huzza! Post by Pine on 08/29/13 at 11:41:05 I turned the 6000 mile mark on my way to AT&T and lunch. Sitting eating alone, I got to pondering... So my 2003 has 6000 miles on it 5500 from me, and all that in the last two years. But does that 5500 miles represent "common" seat time? I do not think it does. And here is why: I commute to work each day... it is 20 miles round trip. So 10 miles one way. I always leave at 7:00 am and arrive no sooner than 7:30 and generally about 7:40. The difference of course being traffic. But this also is telling in terms of how many hours I have been in the saddle. So while its only 5500 miles its: 5500 /10 = 550 trips @ .5 hours per trip = 225 hours Does that sound right? Thats a good bit of saddle time to me. :o 225 hours @ 60MPH = 13500 miles... were I riding mostly highway (in two years!) No one enjoys riding in traffic. Even in a car, its not pleasant.. on a bike its downright scary and being "that" alert for 30 - 40 minutes per stretch can be very wearisome. Even so, adding the exhilaration of riding the bike does help to ease the trials of a city commute. |

I am now retired, riding my scooter, looking at 6,500 miles and over 200 hours per year. You may not like being on the road, I do, on the scooter. The last year it seems whenever I do have a half day all to myself it's raining LOL.........oh well at least I enjoy wrenching when I can't ride :D Average 1.5k miles a year :( |

Post by WD on 08/30/13 at 06:46:30 You'll get in the big leagues eventually... ;) My Savage was 2 weeks old when it went in for the 600 miles service, with 1200 miles or so on it. And that was the last time it was ever in a dealership work bay. To date it only has between 21 and 22K miles on it, I try to have a bigger bike and use the Savage as mainly a toy/trainer. My 1999 Kawasaki Vulcan 800A saw 44K miles in 18 months, and was only ridden in 2 counties in WA state. My 2005 only saw around 8K in 3 months of winter use... Then the steering head bearings failed, I crashed and got rid of the bike. New job starts Tuesday. Number one priority after catching up a bunch of bills is buying another VN800A. I kept my conversion full rear fender, my customized tool roll and saddlebags, and the 800A seat for the Savage has a Mustang brand studded seat cover (with mods by me). I'll keep the Savage around for backup duties. For fun riding and commuting, I need something that can get out of its own way. And since I remember the modifications that let the Vulcan clear 100 mph at less than 1/2 throttle... |

But between working full time, my wife working part time and having to shuttle 5 kids around to activities, I take every ride as a chance to be out by myself, even though I do like taking the wife with me for the occasional date night ;) |

I bought it new on 8/25/2007 so over the 6 years I've averaged 3700 miles per year mostly commuting to work with a few 500+ mile weekend trips on it. I would probably ride more but I'm a part-time professor in the spring and fall and if I teach right after my real job, I err on the side of caution on damp days since I hate teaching in squishy shoes. |

It's a 2006 and, as an American bike, it had 2270 miles on it. I'll be rolling over 11000 by the end of this weekend. I rarely commute to work with it, so yes, my missus is a bit of a bike widow this riding season. I have the Verslavy ready to go, but I begrudge the down time to install it. I'll try to get it done before I store it for the winter. My riding buddies up here in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, ride up until early December. I'll tough it out as long as I can, but might slow down by November. |
