Title: Is this a problem?
Post by Rush-rks on 08/29/13 at 09:43:20

Just noticed this on my front tire wondering if it is a safety issue.  I think they are tubed tires if that makes any difference or not.

Depends on how deep...  hard to tell in the pic...
How old is the tire?...

I would say original tire 4800 miles 2006.  Took a little piece of thin stiff plastic like a credit card to that one little wide spot maybe 16th of a inch if that much

On a stock tire of that age,... I'd consider it and opportunity to upgrade...
That rubber is pretty old and dried out...
A new tire will give you much better grip...
Check out Shinko 712's,...  (my current favorite)...
or,.. Kenda Cruz,.. Dunlop 404,... lots o' choices...

Never seen it before.
The question is... what is it?
manufacturing defect or road hazard?
being as straight a line as it is, I would guess that it's a manufacturing defect.  Which means you've had it this long and it hasn't killed you yet.
front tire at 5k is about half used. I'd keep a close eye on it, but plan to replace well before normal.  if the wear bars are close to being touched, then it's time to replace.  This is not one to stretch to the limits.

I'd also change it out now if you are one to push the bike to its limits.

I have about 8500 on my front tire and meant to change it this year, but haven't done it yet.  Its a 2006 model also.

These WV roads can be he11 on tires, huh?   :)

That is a big YES on WV roads..they're awful.  Versy to answer your question now that I think of it I believe it is from road hazzard.

I remember some road work about a month ago..there was steel plates laid staggered in a road in a slight curve I remember coming up on them and I was on the the brakes and when my rear tire crossed it I remember it locking up for a second..scaring the bejesus out of me ! I almost bet that is where that cut came from..steel plate in the road

+1 on the Shinko 712s. And they weren't that expensive either.

Personally I would replace it. Having the rear blow out is one thing but having the front blow is something I would not like to experience.

I've had my 712s since 2009 and they've been great for me. Almost all my riding is in town riding and they handle so much better than the stock IRCs did.

When I purchased the wife's savage it had a similar slash across the back tire, fairly deep too. I just went ahead and replaced it with what the mc shop had on hand, think they were dunlops, don't remember, I have to look, replaced the front brake pads while they were at it.

Mine was a 2005 that I bought used in 2009 - this is the sidewall of those same tires I already posted...  :o

That tire's lost enough petroleum... it shouldn't qualify as rubber anymore...

Now no longer a problem !  Shinko 712 and a new tube too. Does real good now I need a rear tire and going to try to get one this week its not cracked or dry rotted like the front one was just tread bare.

Hi; hate to butt in on this, but what size on the Shinkos?

I'm wanting to replace the stock tires.

On my 2013 the book lists a 140/80 15 rear but at American Motorcycle Tire I'm seeing only at 140/90 15 rear in the 712.

I'm not clear at all on tire sizes.  Would this be a straight swap on a stock bike? Would my existing tube fit (only 3K on the tires but they ride like crap.)

Thanks in advance for any info.

The stock tire was the only 140/80 that bike eversaw. A 90 will havew the speedo more accurate. Get one,, ^YOuve gotten the best out of the stock rear. I got 5,000, but it was a lousy ride, expecially  that last 2,000.

Cool, thanks for the info.  Have a long ride coming up for Broderick Crawford Day.  San Diego up to Angeles Crest, Rim Of The World, Big Bear and other points in that area.

I must concur that the Shinko 712 are better than the others I have ran. I have tried Dunlap, IRC, Cheng-Shin "Barracuda". All theses tires wore out with in 8,000 to 10,000 miles or dry rotted. I have ran the 712's for I guess 1.5 years now. About 20,000 miles, give or take. (if you run 40PSI.)  have ran them on long trips (Dallas Tx to Miami fl.- Houston Tx to El Paso TX. Roswell Nm to Houston TX. New Orleans to Houston Tx. & etc...
