Title: Half face helmet vs 3/4 face helmet
Post by Afan on 08/29/13 at 09:05:11

Yes, I know that 3/4 face helmet gives you much more protections than half face helmet. My question is actually does half face helmet gives you any protection at all or it's for states they require to have-somethinng-on-your-head only?
I would like to have one because I can hear better. At least around the town?

A half helmet gives about 30% protection... just your skull...
Chances are 60+% that you'll lead with your face...

You hear better wearing a FF helmet than a person in a car...
Over 50mph,... wind noise defeats ambient sounds no matter what you have on your head...
JMHO...

I don't think you could pay me enough money to wear one of those bowl type helmets on my head.  While I do wear an open face helmet, I'd at least go with an old school 3/4 helmet at a minimum (what I have is a bit better than that, see image here)

For comparison, I assume you are asking about something like this:

My dad (who is a retired state police officer, never a motorcycle rider himself, also a volunteer firefighter/rescue squad member, so he's seen plenty of accidents along the way) and I were talking about helmets a bit last night as I couldn't recall if Maryland does or does not require helmets at this time.  (We've been through periods of not required, then required, not, then required again...)  As my dad pointed out, if you look at the riders that are out there, you can pretty much tell.  Lots of half helmets out there among the riders that would otherwise have gone without helmets.

Half helms provide a little protection, but there is still a lot of soft tissue up there that isn't supposed to get beaten on in the ways that might occur if something happened when riding a bike.  If I didn't have a serious tendency to steam up full face helmets, I'd probably be a full face user at this point.  I may yet go back and get a full face helmet, but want one that has good ventilation so I can avoid steaming up the shield.  More protection is a good thing (even though I also have a tendency to go out riding in jeans and a golf/polo style shirt, leaving behind the nice riding jacket that I got that is padded and provides some riding armor).

That's true.
Though, I was thinking more for in town rides, for 30-35 mph rides to store or to visit friend or to do some other errands where I would like to ride bike rather than drive car.
Yes, it's still 60+ % chance to finish on my face but with that thing on top of my head I'll protect skull much better then having nothing, right. Last two days in Des Moines, IA we had 100F. After 10 minutes of ride my head was sweaty, inner part of the helmet wet... Hard to have that thing on my head...

Listen, I'm not trying to prove you wrong. I just don't know the numbers and details and stuff because I'm newbie. And I want to know. And where to find them easier then here. :)

Thanks a lot.

Yes, that's what I was talking about.

It's just sometimes the stupid half prevails the smart half of my brain.
:D

To be fair,... bicycle riders wear those little noggin' lids,.. and feel safe..
Of course they do get hit and die occasionally, too...

At lower residential speeds, you do have more control of how you land in a crash... you can try to protect your face...
At speeds over 50mph, in a crash,.. you're functioning on your lizard brain...

I'll bet, those bicycle helmets are equal in protection to half helmets,... and they have better cooling...
I've had two major crashes on the street...
One, I slid it out,and never hit my head at all...
The other,.. I kissed a truck grill, and ricocheted face first into pavement...
:-*...
:-?...

I wear a 3/4 when it is cold out or I'm on an unfamiliar bike. 1/2 helmet the rest of the time. But if I am in a freedom of choice state, the lid comes off. Absolutely hate wearing them.

I'm even returning my vintage race bike to street legal form. Class rules changed to require 2010 or newer spec full face helmets. Not interested.

The way unlicensed/uninsured mostly untrained minorities drive in west TN, my bikes see zero city use. If I need to go to town, other than for escort rider duties, I take the cage.

I use a 3/4, always have. The new ones have all this fancy vents and such, so even at 35 - 40 you can catch at least a hint of breeze on your noggin. Face it ... at 100 degrees your hot everywhere anyways.

PS: I terribly dislike a FF, because it prevents my vision looking down, it just frustrates me soo much. Were it not for that, I certainly like the style, function, and safety of the FF.

I'm with Pine... always 3/4.  Usually with the shield flipped up.... only pull it down if its dusty or rainy.   FF is definitely more protection, but I feel like they smother me.  And they make my head feel too heavy.

Don't remember when they came up with this, and not sure if its ever been updated, but this was shown at my MSF class.  As you can see, a large percentage of impacts would not be protected against with a half helmet.  But another thing they told us was riding is like climbing a ladder... your own personal risk assessment will determine how high you climb.

Full face for me all the time ATTGATT, I'm ugly enough to not want to risk wearing anything else and get into an accident!    ;D

And I agree with Serow, I used to wear a skull cap when I was young, you can hear so much better with a full.

I wear a Bell Custom 500 most of the time ... it's a 3/4 Retro-styled lid that is very comfortable ...

On the rare HOT day we have up here, I have a G-Max 3/4 that I throw on ...

I do believe that F.F. helmets are the best choice for most folk and offer the best protection, but for reasons stated by some previous Posters to this topic, I don't have one and prefer the O.F. lids ...

I did a face plant into the back of my buddies bike at maybe only 5 mph. I fractured my wrist and broke some fingers and developed fluid around my heart which is still there. The thing is I have never hit anything so hard in my live and once I was a passenger in a Volkswagen bug that hit a large car head on. I went thru the windshield and hit the other cars windshield and bounced back into the Volkswagen hard enough to break the seat and was lying in the back when it caught fire. The bike accident was worse. I stopped instantly when my face smashed into my buddies bike. Cracked my helmet and shattered the face shield. I can't imagine what my face would have looked like in a half face helmet.  It's your head, and I guess it all depends on how much you value it. I'd go with a full face.

The last bike I totalled I dented the drivers cab corner, face first. It flexed the HJC face guard in enough to earn me 2 stitchesinmy lip.

A 3/4 face helmet woulda left me with 3/4of a face.
