Title: M/C Rebuild
Post by SauronsMouth on 08/28/13 at 17:59:47

Hello, all. I am rebuilding my Master Cylinder. I made a topic the other day to buy a new M/C from anyone on here, but decided to rebuild it instead. I received my rebuild kit this morning but I am having a hard time removing the snap ring. I went to AutoZone to buy snap ring pliers, but they weren't long enough. O'Reilly's, not long enough. Harbor Freight, you guessed it, not long enough. I have been everywhere in my city and I'm tired of wasting gas and my time. ANY IDEAS?!?! I'm at my wits end, here! Surely someone on here has rebuilt their M/C and can give me a pointer or two on the snap ring. Thanks in advance.

Never seen anyone Need to fix one,,
BUT, If Ya Need alonger nose on the pliers, maybe youre gonna hafta build something. I dont buy every tool I need, Ive made a few

Look at some needle nose pliers & a bench grinder.
Keep the thing cool, dont make the metal soft,

Yep......Those snap rings are way down there.  I have taken them out, and I had to use some very long and slender needle nose pliers.

Justin, I'm one of those fellers that likes to do things on his own. I'm no mechanic but I'm a helluva tinkerer! ;) I like the idea of making some. Thanks.           Dave, it is waaaay down there. I've not come across a snap ring so far down on any other bike. Between yours and Justin's ideas, I am now ready to yell and curse more German obscenities. ;D I thank you both, gentlemen.

It is not that far down.....unless something has happened to push it down farther than it should be.  The rubber cover should come off, and the snap ring should be visible just above the piston.  It is not that hard to get to.....honest.

C-clips tend to be "single use" items...
They usually disappear into the ether upon removal...

I must have 50 of them somewhere in my shop... :-?...

I rebuilt the M/C on my old Honda, and it also had a snap ring WAAAAAAAY down there.  There are a few ways to tackle this issue.  You can buy one of these:  http://www.powersportsplace.com/parts/ptm-pp2560?seid=pspse1&gclid=CLD_-7XSprkCFRPl7AodD3YAug

If you have a pair of pliers like these:  http://www.amazon.com/25356-Heavy-Duty-Snap-Pliers/dp/B00062YZOE that have interchangeable tips, you can make a long tip to reach waaay down in there out of a couple nails.  Thinking something like this:  http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x86/madmark73/pliers.jpg

Of course, you could just do it the way he did it in the picture.   ::)

Can't take credit for that image.  Here is the parent thread:  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=47762.0
