Title: Progressive Shocks: Another WOW endorsement!
Post by deejaysham on 08/28/13 at 17:15:17

I just got my progressive shocks installed on my bike and I gotta just post here for anyone considering it: WOW!  What a difference it makes.  Honestly, the stock shocks didn't feel so bad to me but I'm gearing up for a big road trip so I figured I'd upgrade.  Riding around the streets of Denver I kept going "Did they improve this road since I was last on it?"

I ended up aiming for bumps and cracks in the pavement to try and feel them... sometimes I could but sometimes I wasn't sure if I missed them or what.  So smooth!

My corbin seat should be here in about a week too and I'm super excited for my S40 to be fully worthy for some long-haul trips!

Can you tell us what the Progressive model no. is and the length?  I'm thinking of upgrading to Progressives.

I got the 412-4201C 11.5" from JC Motors.  Highly recommended, both the model and the seller.

Here's the direct link to what I got:

Point A to Point B is Denver (where I've been this month and where I bought the S40) back to my home of San Francisco.  I'm taking vacation time and doing a wandering route home.  I don't have the whole thing planned out, since I sorta think that's the best way to do it.  I have a few objectives, though.

* Hit as many national parks as possible: Arches, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, Big Basin, and Yosemite
* Stay off the interstates whenever possible to soak up the scenery
* Prioritize enjoying the moment over any mileage target.  No stress about progress, milestones, pace, or setting iron butt records.

Other than that, I'm planning to just be a guy and his S40.  I'm highly excited.

Oh and as for this, I was hard pressed to notice the back getting raised up.  In fact if I hadn't read about it here I probably wouldn't have noticed it.  But since I knew the back was higher I looked for it and the best I could do was say "Oh... I guess it used to be lower..."  But the bike's profile doesn't look weirdly high to me.  Looks and feels totally normal in the saddle, just a lot smoother of a ride.

Can I ask what saddlebags you've got in that photo?

I was originally thinking of going super minimal with just a Kriega US20 bag and staying in motels along the way.  But I've previously done bicycle touring and I have this great super compact tent and camping gear that I could bring if I add a set of saddlebags so now I'm reconsidering.

I've seen these talked about on the forums and I love their look but I wouldn't know the first thing about mounting them:

Is it complicated to do?

The saddlebags I have are made by a company called Saddleman. They are from their Express Drifter series. They are alright. I keep all my rain gear in one and my trip'n equipment in another. They came with a throw over option so you can mount them with a strap under your rear seat, but I took that off and made some solid aluminum brackets and bolted the bags to them. I also added an aluminum backing plate to make them extra sturdy, as the plastic backing plate it comes with is said to brake over time. So was it easy? Lol, I with all the modifications I made, I certainly created myself a ton of work. But they don't budge and have held up real nice!  ;D

If you do the throw over option, just make sure you get the brackets that keep the bags from swinging into your tire. There are lots of universal kits out there.

Just keep in mind too that the shock on the left side of the s40 sticks out a lot more than the one on the right. So make sure you have enough clearance!  :o

I also used PVC pipes as extra storage. Since my aluminum mounting brackets were large enough, I was able to just bungie cord stuff on top of them. In the picture, you can see a black tube on either side of my seat above my saddle bags. I used a leather like material and made cases for them. Worked great for holding a huge giant beating stick maglight I slept with every night, and a few tin cans of food.

Yeah, bungie cords rock. I think I used like 16 - 18 all over my bike that trip. Get some!   ;)

will better shocks makes a difference for rider weights less than 150 lbs?

From what I've read shocks with lower progression numbers are better suited for lighter riders.

For example on older dual rate progressive shocks the spring rate recommendations are as follows-
*60/90 for guys under 200 lbs.
*70/100 for guys 200 to 220 lbs.
*80/110 for guys over 220 lbs.

a little late to this party- but i bought the cortech saddlebags and they worked great for my trip. i didn't even need brackets. they attached easily to the top of the shocks and wrapped around the back .  i threw a duffel bag on top of em and bungeed it to the sissy bar. lots of room.  the great thing about the cortech saddlebads is they expand if needed. i will probably buy the rest of the cortech luggage set for next season. i bought mine at performance cycle on broadway (if you're still in town).  they'll let you take the bags outside and try them on your bike before buying them.

Hi sarahkhas,

Which cortech model # did you buy ?

The stock brackets are rubbing against my tire since I accidentally upgraded the sidewall height :(

I bought these (Cortech 2.0 36L saddlebags):

http://www.cortechperformance.com/xcart/product.php?productid=380

They touch the shocks a bit but you can get em pretty high on the back so they don't touch much.  My biggest concern was the bags pushing on the turn lights, but I didn't have any problems and don't forsee that being a problem now that I've used them. I secured it in the back by the fender, running it under the turn lights.  They're awesome bags, my only complaint is the rain covers are definitely challenging to get on in the rain!  I love the outside pockets.

hey deejay...
How was the fit? Did you have to do anything with the shocks you bought like new eyelets or anything?
btw...if I bought some on ebay does anyone know what eyelet kit should I then order from progressive?
Thanks!

The stock Suzuki shocks are not very good....Suzuki probably didn't pay more than $ 25 a pair to have them made.

Progressive shocks are made in several different models......$ 200 to more than $ 600 a pair.  They have more travel, better valving, and lots of different spring rates available.  When spending this kind of money,  a "One Size Fits All" approach does not work and the shocks need to be selected based on your ridings style (single/double), your weight, and the kind of roads you ride on.

You need to do some reading of old posts, try the Search function or scan through the old posts, and look in the Index for the Tech Section.  If this doesn't help....start your own thread as many may not see what you have posted in this thread.

Is this correct?  Are progressives a brand as opposed to a different model so to speak.  How do they compare to the vs 800 shocks?

"Progressive" is a term, referring to a graduated spring rate... giving some soft travel and some stiffer...
It is also a brand name... (they don't own the concept,... just the name)...
You can see shocks with graduated springs... they are springs that start with narrow spacing and increase to wider...
I personally think Progressive brand are excellent, but overpriced...
Most shocks now, are progressive... it's just a matter of finding the right firmness for your bike and weight,... and choosing how much travel you want...
More travel is always better... within the limits of swingarm design (12.5" on our Savages)... but, many don't like the look...
Then there is spring rate... (figure your average load,.. and err on the lighter side)... the more travel you use, the more you take advantage of the extra travel...

More length is better,.. less rate is better... (as long as it supports your load)...

I have Intruder shocks...12.25"...  they come from a heavier bike, so I expected them to be firm... they aren't... I have them set on the firmest position, and I am 145lbs...(must be the angle of the mounting)...
I do love them... but I wouldn't recommend for regular two-up riding...

... but,.. don't over buy the spring rate... you are killing the advantage if you aren't using the full travel most of the time...
JMHO... :-?...

Here is a link to the best online supplier that I have found for "Progressive" brand shocks.  You have to know what you want to buy....if you use their guide for the stock S40 or LS650 you will be getting a stock height replacement....which may not be the best approach.  If you know specifically what you want and are patient, you can also find good deals on eBay.

http://www.jcmotors.com/c-1262-shocks-suspension.aspx#Ma141|

You can also find take off shocks on eBay that are not "Progressive" brand, but are better shocks than stock....but once again youd need to know what fits and works.

Thanks for the insight.  All I know is that I would prefer something a bit longer to give more distance between the tire and the fender.  Also, something to give a smoother ride on unfriendly terrain.  I'll need to do a lot more studying.

First ride of the bike with the progressive suspension 412's installed ( to work). Much improved ride. Little bumps are not bothersome at all. Larger bumps still harsh, but there seems to be greater control of the bike. This may be partially due to the elevation of the rear which then put more weight on the front. This may change when I  get my tool in, so I can adjust the shocks for a softer ride. (currently set to most stiff).

The bike is much more rider friendly, which is an odd statement to make about a bike that is already very rider friendly.
