Title: Are front and rear turn signals / indicators ...
Post by terpfan1980 on 08/26/13 at 19:59:55

Are the front and rear turn signals / indicators interchangeable?

I bought a set of front signals that should fit my 1998 LS650P, with the clamps on them (got a nice deal via eBay).  The right front signal was damaged when a previous owner dropped the bike.  It was since taped up and was OK'd in inspection, but it droops a bit and doesn't look that great, so I'd like to replace it with the replacement that I acquired.

On the rear of the bike, the left side signal was damaged, same deal as the right front (taped up to stay in place).  If I can use what would have been the left front from the pair that I bought, I'd be happy to put it into service, but I wasn't sure that they were interchangeable like that.

Yes, in principle turn signals are interchangeable, except for length of electrical wires (the front turn signals wires is shorter). and even if the front turn signal set on the tail, then one wire will be free(side lights)

If they are l.e.d. they wont work.... I hope you didn't buy l.e.d.

Nope, didn't buy led's, just the old traditional light set.  If the wiring is of different lengths (as described here), then I'm probably going to put up a WTB soon for a set of rear signals.

You could just install them and splice the wires together.

Although it was sort of hinted at in a previous thread....the front and rear stock turn signals are different.  The fronts have running lights built in, and there will be 3 short wires......one ground, one running light and one turn signal wire.  The rear only functions as turn signals and will have 2 longer wires.....one for ground and one for the turn signal.  It is not legal in most areas to run a yellow running light in the rear.

Just adding my .02...

The housing, lens, and rubber parts are identical. The bulb fits into a rubber stopper part the just pulls out and can be swapped. I know because I just this.

As said above the front are three wire with two element bulbs, the rear are two wire, single element bulbs. The wires are of different lengths.

Taking the side trim off the rear fender ( and then putting it back on) is a PITA.
