hey all,

not sure where to start with this issue so I'm starting here with the pros.

went to start my bike this morning, battery shut off immediately when i hit the starter like the battery was dead (it's definitely not). gas tank is full.

turned off the key, checked my wiring. tried it again it started right up.

after idling for a few minutes the neutral light started to flutter and turn off and the engine went with it.

third times a charm, but a quarter mile down the road it started to do it again at a red light. turned around and headed home as she fluttered, revved, cut in and out and backfired the whole way.

i installed a new battery & manual petcock last summer.

help!

Classic kick stand switch is failing. My 1998 model did that when it was all of 2 or 3 months old. I cut the switch wires where I could easily find them, and twisted the ones on the bike side, not the kick stand side of the harness together. Added a wire nut to take it for a test ride, with the intention of fixing it correctly (solder and heat shrink in the main harness) at a later date. The wire nut is still holding it together, and never had that flutter-sputter-die out of the bike again.

but I'd bypass it by taking the seat off, disconnecting a green connector and shoving a paperclip into it.

thanks guys!

just an update, the bike now won't start at all, seems like the battery is now dead or there's a bad connection somewhere.

unfortunately I have no time to fix it this week and she needs a new pair of rear brakes anyways... so into the shop she went.

I'll update what the problem was and how they fixed it once I get it back.

Look at battery connections & the big ground on theengine.

Who told you you needed new rear brakes? Never happens to the rest of us unless you got like well over 20,000 miles on the bike ....

Insist on getting your old parts back if they aleady have the bike in the shop for this classical stealership rip off "repair".

NEVER put your bike in the shop unless you have asked here first -- stealerships are starving for work and THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS BIKE AT ALL SINCE THEY ONLY WORK ON ONE EVERY OTHER YEAR OR SO.

The idiot who told you you needed brakes on the rear is likely just an idiot -- they are brake shoes and they are HUGE and they last literally just about forever.

I'm on my 3rd set of rears. I only used the rear brake since the front system is faulty and I haven't converted to a twin leading shoe drum yet. If you roll using the rear only, the brakes shoes only last about 3 years.

Yup, third set of rears after not using the front brake much ever, after what ?? something like 50,000+ miles racked up on the bike ??

At about 20,000 miles per rear drum shoe set, that's about right, now ain't it?
