I have been searching here and elsewhere for more info on Shorty Mufflers. Some reviews and other bike forums have helped a little. But I am still not sure about them. I am wanting to get some for my S40. I am willing to repack if necessary. My current pipe is way too loud and is just annoying when on longer rides.

I took it off today to see if I could repack it or what. This is what I found. Looking down pipe from header:

It looks as if not much is being done in the way of blocking the exhaust. A layer is welded onto sides of muffler with holes in it, and some bigger "baffles" bent out into air flow. So while I couldn't see straight through it, I could see plenty of light coming through the end when held in the light. I really like the look of the Shorty and would like to use it, but if it is no way usable then I will go another route. I just figured it had to be quieter than what I currently have, even if it is only 12" and lightly packed.

If anyone has info or experience with the EMGO 12" Universal Shorty Muffler, I would very much appreciate anything you can tell me. I am wondering mainly about volume. Also, any noticeable change in air flow, power, etc.

Emgo's are cheaply made... they'll burn out fast, and are probably louder than you want...
Find a Harley take off... for $20 or $30... (just make sure, it hasn't been drilled out or de-baffled)...

I have one on my bike it is pretty loud but I don't see anything wrong with the construction, it is re-buildable and the chrome looks pretty good too. I had to increase the jetting because it was running lean and the power increase was very noticeable.

yea. I looked at the HD Dynas but don't care for the styling. that's a last resort right now.

phantom, did you repack yours at all? I guess what I'm really trying to figure out is: is a shorty with packing and baffle going to be quieter than my turn out muffler with nothing. I don't think mine is quite like having an open pipe but it sure is super loud when I give it any throttle.

I repacked it with some fmf muffler packing I got from e-bay, it was still pretty loud even after the repack though.

Mine is a repackable Emgo 12" shorty with a 29" fishtail extension. Welded a "stick stopper baffle in the fishtail, wrapped the Emgo muffler core with copper kitchen scrubbies.

Still loud, but very mellow. If I need to tone it down, I pack more scrubbies into the extension.

ylwf3vr, yea I would think so. my current turn out almost touches the brake cable and i've put many miles on it with no problems.

I ordered the 12" shorty from motorcycle superstore. cheapest I could find including shipping(free) and some cheap packing. should be in by middle of next week. I am going to try to do a couple of videos while in the process that way others can hear the difference between no muffler, turn out and shorty. wish I had stock for a standard to base sound on but oh well. I'll try to keep everything I can the same for science! and if the shorty doesnt work out....theres always ebay.

in totally other news...I bought a set of Biltwell Frisco bars. SUPER excited about those coming in! I will do a review type post when I get them on. maybe I will have my sissy bar done by then(procrastination) and take some shots of my bike in its current incarnation. I guess cafe section would be the right place for that kind of thing

12" shorty by itself sounds like a Vietnam War era Huey UH1D medevac/gunship helicopter...

If you want mellow, decent unobtrusive looks, and can stomach a bit bigger muffler... go to Tractor Supply and grab an AC-4. Allis Chalmers gasoline powered farm tractor unit. Very British looking when installed on a motorcycle. Somebody on the site runs one, but can't recall off hand who.

That Emgo unit needs a stick stopper baffle added if you don't put a tail pipe extension of some sort on it. I have a pair of open end 12" Rocky/Nempco/Tucker glasspacks on the 63 Honda. It was as loud with them as it was without them, of course they are fairly old, the low pipe TT conversion was done somewhere between 1969 and 1972...

The Emgo packing lasts pretty long, right? Yeah, right. 20 minutes into the first ride the muffler went from pretty loud to straight-pipe loud. The packing lasts only a little longer than toilet paper. At first I tried to just use better packing, but that didn't make much diff in the noise, and it didn't last very long either.

The latest mod, as shown in the link above, sounds manly enough to be fun, but not so loud that it pisses off everyone within a mile. It has a few hundred miles on it now.

actually, your post was one that I have looked at a lot while researching. but I am getting the 12" shorty. I figure at least itll point it back instead of out the side lol. but seriously, as long as it mellows it out a little and hopefully quietens slightly, i'll be more than pleased.

Should be in, along with my new bars!!!, next week sometime. i'll post an update then.

So my shorty pipes came in. Its a no go for sure. They have two different sized ends so they can be more universal. Well, the end that fits our pipes have the bolt for the internal baffle in the way. So there would have been very little to clamp onto my header. Also, would have had to rig something up for the shorter mounting position and get rid of the ugly bracket underneath. After I made a video of my current muffler and talked to people I ride with(mom, dad, brother...) I decided to just keep my current setup. Its loud but not that loud I suppose. I guess I just notice it more cause it never leaves my right ear.... and I finally got my needle spacing where I like it anyways ;D.
