Title: Oil usage
Post by rong on 08/21/13 at 20:29:42

What is the expected oil usage for a Savage or S40 as it ages.  Would a bike with, say 15,000 miles on it use a lot of oil in between recommended oil changes?  Or with even more miles (20,000 - 25,000 miles)?

Feel free to respond with your experience.

Open to your thoughts.

Thanks,

rong

I have 20,000. I cant remember ever seeing a change in oil use as the miles racked up. Its always the same,, change oil, run it around, get, Ohh, I really cant remember now, but Id get around 1,000  to 1,200 on that oil before the use started going up. By 1500 it gonna use oil if im running any
speeds at all. OHH, I can no longer remember the miles & use,I just remember closer to oil change time, the more it uses,

FWIW, my Savage (see signature block) w/ 13K miles on it burns no detectable amount of oil in between 2000 mile oil change intervals......

FYI, my bike is almost purely an urban warrior.  I do virtually no long stretches at over 60 mph.....

Mine's at 30k...
If I ride like a good boy,... and putt around under 60mph... (little bursts of gutsy bravado)... I use zero...
20 min. of 75+mph on the highway,.. and I will suck some oil...
(I always check it, after a spirited run)...
I don't think that's a mechanical problem... just a lot of "suck, squish, bang, blow" at a high rate....
Mine has always gobbled a bit of oil when I whip her...
That's a lot of blowby in a little box...
:-?...

Well you know the harder you ride her, the more lube she's gonna need....

It is a fact of life that some engines use more of some brands than they do of others. I have seen it in over 45 years of lawn mowing, dirt biking, backhoes, etc. My bike uses less Rotella than Castrol Actevo. I just put a splash in yesterday, which means I am probably getting close to change time. Need to look in my record book and see.

Sorry forgive my ignorance.. so are we talking about when is the suggested oil change?  I heard 2000-3000 miles somewhere, is this correct?

Yes, and, no. I change mine when it gets difficult to shift, as in, starts consistently missing shifts. I've poured out week old Actevo, and have had Rotella go a year or better. Used to have good luck with Castrol GTX 20W50 car oil. Had full synthetic 10W40 vapor away to nothing in just over 300 miles, as in, crankcase needed 2 full quarts added.

Too many variables. Each bike is different, each oil is different, each day riding is different. For my money, if you can't get better than 2K miles per oil change, something is wrong with either your machine, or your riding style. Liquid cooled bikes do use significantly less on average, I've gone 10-15K miles between changes on Vulcans w/o issues, running cheap 15W40.

Thanks for the response.
In general, it sounds like there is not a whole lot of extra oil used as it ages … a least up to 30,000 miles.  And with higher speeds, the consumption may go up a little.
Of course, each engine could be different, based on how it’s cared for.
Thanks,
Ron G

Yep Ron, that's pretty much it in a nutshell. Mine goes through some oil but it's leakage, not burning. Of course I've got 17,550 miles on mine and I ride it like I stole it!

I haven't had to add oil between oil changes and I change the oil about every 3000 miles. Bike is a stock 2007 with 11K miles. I'm running Rotella synthetic, combined city riding and long trips. I do keep the speed under 75 most of the time.

Of course, to continue the metaphor, the older she gets, the more lube she's gonna need.  ;)
