Title: Strange behavior
Post by Afan on 08/20/13 at 20:25:48

I have some strange behavior of my S40. You know when you are low on gas, minutes before you have to switch to reserve, your bike is "loosing" the power, engine is stuttering, sometimes shut off... I can (somehow) understand what's going on, but when there are the same "symptoms" and the tank is full - what's going on?  :-[

Thanks for any info.

Bad fuel, bad petcock, dirty carburetor or stuck float. Did it do it right after filling up? If so, bad fuel is the most likely. Followed by a failing vacuum petcock, or one that has a compromised vacuum line. Better than 25% of petcock issues turns out to be it needs a new vacuum line, the silicone vent line off a dirt bike gas cap works great. Stop by Cycle Gear or any dealership, they all carry them (in choices of color even).

That wasnt his question
Did it start acting this way right after you filled it up?

Sorry...
No, not immediately...

That eliminates bad fuel then. Unless you always gas up at the same station...

In order, and one item per attempt... Lube the gas cap lock by dripping some oil down a partially inserted key, insert/twist key a few times, go for a ride. Fixed? Cap vent was stuck closed.

Add some Seafoam or similar, run that tank at least half down. Fixed? Lightly dirty jets.

Remove carb bowl and inspect jets, if they are green they are toast. Swap them out. If they look dirty, you can clean them out with a heavy sewing needle. Fixed? Bad jets.

Or just drain your tank into a gas can, pull and clean the petcock inlet screen/s. Even our fresh weekly no-tax off highway diesel has been plugging up tractor petcocks.

Did you already Raptor yours? I'm too tired to look back through right now. If not, it's time.

I used a torch tip cleaner on my jets.

Just dumping the bowl into a glass will let you see whats in the bowl of the carb,, loosen that screw.

Also make sure your gas cap is venting properly and not blocked up.
