Hope you consider taking professional tuition like an MSF course. Relations can teach you bad habits as well as good. Any way you will find all you need to know about the workings of your Savage on this site. Welcome.

Went for a ride today and rode down a gravel road it was weird a little freaky but I got through it we made it home just in time we had a big storm go over us. Oh yeah correction I said 98 I meant 89 Savage lol, Doh!!!

I have a 98, only difference is mine is a 5 speed and a different stator/ignitor (makes it spark).

Cool 5 speed would be nice I seem to be trying for 5 on my 4 speed, lol!
I'm sorry I don't know can you explain Spark? :)

Fires the spark plug. The ignition system changed a little bit when the model went from 4-5 speeds. Something about some magic magnet that tells the plug to fire.  ;)

You'd never miss the 5th gear, it's useless. Almost exactly the same ratio as the older 4th gear. If not exactly.

Have fun learning your bike, each Savage is a unique machine. And I do mean that in a good way.

Now you know why dogs like to stick their heads out of the car window!

Yeah, this is my only real beef with Savage. The rest of the issues can be fixed or at least reduced in effect by the application of a little time, elbow grease and cash, (like the cam chain tensioner, head plug and suspension) but man I wish the spread between 4th and 5th gear was the same as the spread between 3rd and 4th.

I find myself skipping fourth gear when accelerating to highway speeds.  On the other hand, having fourth and fifth geared so close comes in handy when I need to accelerate briskly to pass.

Cool good to know about the spark plug firing. And yes now I know why dogs like sticking their head out the window lol it's awesome. I went for my longest ride yet today we rode 133km or about 80 miles! It was a beautiful day I forgot to take a pic. My Savage and I had a blast! Rode with ear plugs today wow man better!!!! She pulls up the hill like a trooper unlike our jeep that you have to shift down to make it! lol Mind you I weigh like 100 lbs soaking wet probably with my gear on hahaha! Peace man and stay safe out there!
