Title: black smoke related to cam chain?
Post by j on 08/16/13 at 16:53:02

Pretty sure my cam chain needs replacing. I posted on here awhile back checking the price the dealership quoted me of $120 labor. Everyone said that was low so I called them back and spoke with another person, they said 400 labor. Scary

Anyway, so I can hear it a little bit at certain RPMs rattling a tad. Bike is also trying to die on me occasionally and whenever it wants to die I rev it a little bit, look back and see the exhaust shoot out a bit of black smoke. Is this likely related to the cam chain or another issue?

The real decision I have to make here is I have VERY limited funds right now, trying to get into med school, and will likely be moving cross country very soon. Trying to decide whether to dump the 600 into this bike to fix it just to haul it across the country or whether to just sell it.

It's got 15k miles, this sound like about right for cam chain replacement? By the way, I'm not mechanically savvy enough to do this myself.

If black smoke is indicating another problem I may just sell as I can't dump more into this bike than that just to haul it somewhere across the country where I may not use it.

Supposing I fix this cam chain issue, are there any other savage specific problems like the cam chain that is gonna come up soon or am I gonna get another 10k out of it? That'll be a deciding factor.

Do sorta love the bike, done a lot of little stuff to it to make it mine, but gotta be realistic here

Thanks guys

Josh

Noop,..
Black smoke means yer' running rich... if this is a sudden new condition, do this test... $30 may fix it, and it's an easy DIY...
Test your Petcock,.. don't just turn it to Prime.. (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1251932429/1)

PS... if you can remove and install a gasket,.. you can do the Versy camchain mod yourself... not much more to it... just 2 bolts and a c-clip once you are inside...(no precise measuring, or filing or grinding)...

Read this before you decide what to do about the cam chain. Like Serobot said, it isn't really that hard to do. Even if you have to pay someone to install the modified adjuster, it's a lot less labor than replacing the chain.

If you can survive A&P you Grasp fundamental mechanical principles. YOUve dissected stuff & seen how muscles pull tendons & move a limb.
If this, then that. very Flow Charty, very mechanical.,
So, since cadavers have thus far been your playground,, why not go to a lawnmower repair shop & ask to buy a junker, take it home, fix it..you fail, youre not screwed.. you win,, well,, you WIN!

Just to clarify I'm premed which means pre surgery

that modified adjuster link. Seems doable except I'm not sure where the 2 hole adjuster came from

Welded ?

A "Versy" comes from Verslagen... He's in the Marketplace, and makes these 2 hole mod's for us... he also pins the plunger... so it can't fall out...  :o...
