Title: Is it something wrong with my windshield?
Post by Afan on 08/14/13 at 21:54:21

Yesterday I bought and installed the windshield. Looks great. After I was testing it riding 50-55-60 mph on highway - it's not so great any more.  It is much less wind noise and less wind etc. but it's so wiggly?!? In one moment I was riding 65 mph behind a truck and it was kind a scary. Before the windshield I was riding several times 70 mph and  except the wind in the chest, no problems nor troubles to keep it strait.
Do I just have to get used to it or I did something wrong?

It's 17" windshield and the top of the windshield is in the line of my nose.
I'll try to post the image tomorrow.

You have to get used to it, you've added a big sail to the front end. You may need to do some side to side and pitch adjustments to get it just right. Perfectly normal.

I put a flyscreen on mine - it's breaks the wind but doesn't do all the wiggly stuff. Small, but worth it - like the Savage.

Before I put my windshield I had a little bag above the front light and it would take away wind from my chest but redirect to my head a lot. It was acting like a flyscreen and didn't have any wobbling too.

But, as WD said, looks like I have to get used to it...  :-/

Yesterday I spent 2 hours riding my bike in all directions (there was some wind from NNW heading SSE) and different speeds, from 45 to 75 mph.
First: yes, the wobbling wasn't so scary any more. I was able to hand;e it without any problems. Just got used to it. The hardest part was driving about 50 mph behind a truck.

Second: The buffeting is almost unbearable for longer riding. The wind is not the same as without the windshield. it was hitting me in the face like a I had a small flag in front of my face and it was slapping me left and right all over my face. :D.

This is my windshield:

And this is my windshield installed:

I think it's installed correct?

The most of the buffeting comes from the bottom - see red arrows.

There is also a wind at my chest but it "pulls" my shirt toward to front, not gluing to the body. It's not hard and hitting. More annoying. If I wear my heavy leather jacket the chest wind is not an issue at all.

Third: I can REALLY hear my bike. Really. :) It's so nice. But, now I can hear some sounds I never heard before and concerned if they are ok or not. :D

If you can angle it up more it will change the buffeting.

It will seriously impact your fuel economy, but, to work right, windshields should be as close to vertical as possible. Following the line of the forks cuts their function by half or better, but is less intrusive to the lines of the bike.

Look at pics of Harley, Indian and Henderson military/police bikes. Windshields are vertical. 1920s through current. Even KZ900/1000 cop shops had upright shields on their fairings.

My next to the last bike with a shield. Ran this same screen on both the 99 800A and the 05 800B (Classic) set like this. No buffeting, no excess fork wobble, and I'm tall enough to see over it set this way.

Really want another 800A. Out handles, out accelerates, better fuel economy than my high bar Savage. Comfortable, proper 21/16 tire combo, easy to find white wall tires if desired, hidden shock so can run real bags... and has a chain and sprockets, easy to fix, easy to clean and lube, can change gearing at will.

You mean this way?

I thing it could change the bottom buffeting, but wit have more "head" buffeting.
But, I can try. It doesn't cost me anything.
:D

Thanks.

Yep, that way, it will redirect the lower air flow as well as the upper.
