Title: Shutdown pops
Post by Toroso on 08/14/13 at 08:40:52

So lately when I shut the engine down I get a pop or fart. I don't recall this happening when I first got the bike. The bike seems to be running really well and I'm not too concerned about it. But what is that telling me and should I be concerned?

verify that the exhaust pipe is tight to the head. This tends to work loose over time. It will let in fresh O2 that can increase the popping.

Do not over tighten!

Also verify that there are no vacuum leaks into the carb/intake, as that will lean out the mixture.

When you turn off the ignition it stops the spark plug from igniting the fuel - but it does not instantly stop the engine from turning and pulling fuel and air out of the carb and pumping it through the engine and into the exhaust system.  The hot exhaust can ignite this unburned fuel and air.....and POOF!

Shutting it off after a long ride with little time to cool down can make it happen more often than slow local rides where the exhaust system is not as hot.

The pops don't hurt a thing......

If mine didn't fart when I shut it off I'd think something was wrong with it  ;D
