Title: Backfire problems after oil change...
Post by Trailwood on 08/13/13 at 16:39:33

So I've got a 2007 LS650 that I've had for a couple of months.  I gave it it's first oil change and have run into some backfire issues.  I'll give you the whole story so it's clear and I would love some ideas for what might be going on...

So I changed the oil and filter a few days ago.  The test ride after went fine and I decided to take it to work.  A few miles from home the bike stalled.  I realized that I was low on gas so I switched to the reserve tank and was off and running again.  When I got to work I noticed that I had a little bit of oil dripping from the drain plug screw.  I tightened it up and went in to work..  While riding home I began getting a lot of backfire.   I did some research to see if I had done something wrong and realized that I was on the higher side of the oil gauge. (still in between the two fill lines, but definitely closer to the top one)  I drained some of the oil and went out for a ride to see if anything had changed but I was still getting the same backfire.  Since this didn't seem to work, I thought that maybe I fouled the spark plug because the oil was too full so I pulled it and put in a new one. (Didn't look like it had oil on it)  This didn't seem to help either.  I'm not sure what to try next...  It seems like it should be something simple given the minimum amount of work that I did.  Could it be a change in the brand or type of oil that I'm using?   It seems to happen while changing lower gears, and gives one last pop a few seconds after shutting it off.  I've been trying not to ride it other than tests because I want to make sure that I'm not doing damage to something.  Thanks in advance for the help!!

You didn't put the filter in backwards, did you?... better hope not...

Check the 2 header bolts for snug,.. but don't over-tighten...(popping)...

If your bike is making oil,.. do this test...
Test your Petcock,.. don't just turn it to Prime.. (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1251932429/1)

Thanks Serowbot...

It looks like it had nothing to do with the oil change or the spark plug.  I found one of the header bolts loose this morning.  Tightened it up and went for a test ride and the popping was gone.  Sounds and runs great.

Thanks!
