Title: how much valve noise is too much?
Post by splash07 on 08/13/13 at 12:49:22

Did a valve job, polished and lapped, about 500 miles ago. I adjusted them within spec and they seem to be making some noise when the engine warms up, not a ton but its noticable with a helmet on. Sounds like a sewing machine ofter the first 10 minutes or so. How much noise is too much?

I understand that a little loose is better than a little tight so I am not loosing sleep over the issue but just curious as to when I should be worried. I also have no pre and post comparison because I put a new dyna muff on and the bike sounds completely different now anyway.

Thanks.

Not trying to pollute your thread, but what exactly does valve noise sound like? Any youtube videos to demonstrate?

I actually wouldn't mind this as well, just so I know what to look for

How much is subjective.
I'd try adjusting them again.
take particular attention to getting both sides the same.
generally what happens is one side is tighter than the other.
and all the noise comes from the loose side.

next possible cause...
I got a head on my bench and the center of the valve stem is worn with a little divot.  How are you going to get the gap correct if you got a little divot?  dam hard to see in the dark, with a rocker sitting on it.  and the only way to flatten it out is to take the cover off and grind it.

It's also possible that the noise isn't coming from there.
but no sense in worrying you now...  adjust.

If it's hot out,... and it sounds like tapping teaspoon on the valve cover,... let's say yer' okay...
... if it sounds like yer' tapping 3/8" ratchet... yer' in trouble...

...(sound analogies are tough)... :-/...

Well since you did a valve job 500 miles ago aren't you about due to check them? Isn't the first valve check at 600 miles new? Also what oil are you running in there?

and looks like im going in to check it out. Its currently my daily driver, as both my car and truck are sidelined temporarily (car got a little too friendly with an oak tree, truck is getting a 2" facelift and new shocks).

I haven't heard many Savages in person but mine sounds about like this one; my valves are in spec (checked within the last 500mi.)  and I put a versey in it not too long ago so I know the cam chain is tight. I suspect if yours sounds similar it's ok. I have noticed from listening to youtube videos that the bikes that still have stock mufflers seem to make more mechanical noise than the ones running other pipes. No idea why.
