Title: Turn signals don't work at all !
Post by Scott.aust on 08/11/13 at 01:16:10

Hello all, I haven't been on here for months as life is always busy. Anyway thought the savage should get a run as its been in the shed for months too ( it does get started every few weeks ) but when I was pre ride checking over it the turn signals don't work. Did the usual wiggle the wires but nothing. Checked the clymer book but couldn't see anything on ( assuming as in a car ) the flasher relay. Without pulling bits apart that I'm not sure of I thought u would ask here. So where to start ? Thanks Scott

Prove you have 12 V to the turn signal switch, prove the switch works.

Thanks Justin, first thing i did was check the battery was at 12.1 V, i have a small trickle charger so i put that on for 6 hours so the battery has 13.7 now. then i pulled the left switch housing off, with the bike not running the turn switch not turned on, headlight and horn all have 10.9 V to them, ( everything else works eg neutral light and stand light, headlight hi and low and the horn ) Once you turn the turn the switch on, either left or right it doesn't matter the volts drop to 0.35 V. I then put the switch back to centre which gives 10.9 V again and crossed the soldered connections to bypass the switch. I can hear a relay clicking on once as I touch the connection ( when i touch the conection together but this is not the on off on off of the usual turn signal timing just power going to the relay ) near the battery / air cleaner area under the seat but the actual lights still do not work.

Just to add to the above when the engine is running it has 14.1 to 14.5 V to all the in side of the switches. On the out side when the switch is on it has 0 volts ( still has .35 V with the engine off ).  I can't tell if the relay is working because I can't hear it over the engine but the lights still don't work by bypassing the switch. (Ps the relay might be under the rear if the tank not the seat if this makes more sense )

If I have V into a switch & no V out, I just MITE suspect the switch,,
Jumper 12 v to the output of the switch.

Here is a link to the wring diagrams in case you don't have one.  This information is listed in the Technical Section.  You cand find it in the Index with Links....Electrical section.

The power for the turn signals first goes up to the Flasher Relay that is located under the tank, on the opposite side of the backbone from the coil.  If there is something wrong with the flasher relay - it will affect the power output to the switch.  If the voltage goes wacko when you run the switch....and the power drops.....I would suspect the relay.  If you want to do a test of your wiring and/or switch.  Remove the relay and jumper the wires across the relay terminals.....then move the switch to the L or R postiion.  If the lights come on  - that confirms the wiring and switch are OK and the relay is bad.

now thats an elegant answer,

Yes that was a very elegant answer and exactly right !! ( yes I know it's been a month but I got busy with life )
Ok the relay is stuffed so next question is do I have to go to the Suzuki dealer and pay an exorbitant price for a new one ( keep in mind i have found eBaying from the US is half the price to start with for new genuine suzuki parts or any parts for that matter, $120 for a rapter here! )   or is there an alternative ?
Thanks Scott

There's a thread on here somewhere about replacing it with a standard auto two prong flasher.  I an not so good with the search function though.
I believe the consensus was you could replace it with pretty much any two prong electronic flasher unit and it gave some part #'s.

Here's a thread about it http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1376091038/2#2

Another http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1360707162/1#1

One more http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1344289719/4#4

Consensus seems to be 2 prong electronic auto flasher will work just fine.

Tracked down 3 choices today-
1. Genuine suzuki $89 plus $25 freight cos there isn't one in the whole of Australia and have to be special ordered.
2. Aftermarket from US $15.80 plus $10. 90 post.
3. In my local city on eBay $19.91 courier to my door tomorrow!
Guess which one I got and I didn't have to move to America !

Side note - when I rang the local dealer and gave him the part number and said it was for a LS650 1986 model he came back with " that is an old bike I think that part has been superseded, I will just check for you "
i don't think he appreciated when he came back with that he could still get it for me and the price Because then i asked for one to fit a GSXR 1100, GS550, DR250, VN800. All of those bikes he asked? No I said but just about every Suzuki built in the last 30 years uses the same on so is there a difference in price? He got a bit crappy and said they were all the same price and none in Australia !
Anyways thanks for your help
