Title: Hisense Sero PRO 7" Touchscreen Tablet  $129
Post by Oldfeller on 08/08/13 at 08:43:56

We watch tablet deals come and go and don't say anything unless it is really good.

This week Walmart will sell (or take a rain check) on a Hisense Sero 7 PRO 7" Touchscreen Tablet PC for $129 which is a Nexus 7 clone (last year's Nexus 7).   Tegra 3 chip and all, plus some slightly faster bits and pieces being 2 years more modern and all.   Plus SD card slot for 32 gigs of memory (or less if you buy a lesser card of course) and a HDMI output port so you can plug up to your bigscreen TV.

This tablet looks to be a hit at the price -- thought you should know.

Versy bought 2 of them at $149 and reported that they worked pretty well.  We might ask him to update his review, especially on the following items.

Viewing angles
Sound
WIFI reception
GPS function
Accelerometer/tilt/game functions

This thing can apparently take  :-? ??? a data plan and a SIMM card ???  :-?  if your carrier is cooperative that is, so it can get plan data off your phone plan when it is away from a WIFI hot zone.   This would be nice for travelling and using it as GPS in your car.

Go to Wally and read the reviews .....

Here's another from a tech magazine.

No slot for a simm card that I saw.

So, no data plan support -- that's bad for on the road use as a GPS device.

You had to pay extra to get it on the Nexus, but it was available if you wanted it.

My favorite thing about this tablet is that Walmart warns you to "empty the tanks of flammable liquids" before returning it. (Check the Walmart link in the OP)  Hybrid tablet?

I picked up a ASUS Memo 10" tablet with the same CPU.
Every thing the same just bigger for less (referb)
So far I'm happy with it but the charger that came with it doesn't charge.
It came with a data cable that works with an Iphone charger though, so it's not the tablet.
Setting it up for technology challenged dad.  His finger doesn't work his iphone, mainly cause he can't hold the phone by the edges and his thumb ends up on the screen.

Found an app for hockey, news and metal detection... really, it detects gold!  That'll be the 1st thing he tries.

the reviews on this on amazon have a couple of consistent complaints:
1) charging port malfunctions after a few months.
2) battery doesn't hold charge after a few month.(possibly related to #1?)

For number 1, I have that problem with every micro-usb device I've ever owned for more than a year. This problem comes from the cable end prying the female connection off the circuit boards when handling the device while it's being charged. I've since learned how to solder in new charging leads to fix that issue - typically near the battery connection.

Number 2 is not a big deal, if the battery can be replaced.

Now, neither of these complaints would be a factor for a dedicated use tablet in the home, car or motorcycle:
- A fridge mounted tablet for weather and news.
- Nav system for the car.(map with current location)
- Speedo for the motorcycle.

In each of these cases, solder the usb micro connection in to the port and re-enforce it with some Sugru(or Bondo) to keep it from becoming torn off the circuit board.

If it's getting a consistent, permanently wired charge, the battery is non factor, as long as it can keep enough voltage to properly power the device (at least 3.6v).

I'm going to get one to see if works as a speedo. A 7" tablet speedo on over the risers would be pretty neat.

Was at Wally world today and seen  a T Mobile galaxy tablet that had a data plan.
Why don't they just throw in cell phone capabilities???

I still think a tablet with front and back camera's (have already), Wi-Fi capability (have already), data plan for net and gps (have already), and cell phone capability (don't have) would really suit all my needs. Just up the memory capability and wham! a device I would be happy with and a lot of other older types because of the bigger screens.
