Title: Not my style......butt.  (NSFW)....
Post by raydawg on 08/07/13 at 19:03:04

I'm a cruiser, will be till the day I die, just me, I enjoy the scenery, not the challenge.
But I gotta say, you guys who bob and cafe do some pretty neat tricks and offer some cool expressions w/ bikes. I saw this one while surfing CL. I think this one, coupled with the 4 bangs, is something special to behold. I could see myself on that a life back way then  ;D

Who actually runs an engine w/o air cleaners?

Ohh,, Its a purty thang,, but I wonder how hard a guy would be leanin on his arms,,
If I saw Id drool on it.
If allowed to ride it, I would,,
I doubt seriously Id want it. Unless I had a really BIG Empty wall with a REal serious shelf on it.

just a broom stick jog, hardly any leaning at all.
tail light doesn't fit the seat... just grabbed what ever was available.
at least he picked the right 2x2's, the pulse in pipe is 180° apart.

After enlarging the photo a few times I see what looks to be the edges of where a set of chaps snap/velcro together on the inside of her left leg.
The squares along that vertical line don't match up.
This sure is a lot of hard work.   :)

Those are very nice looking chaps though.
Yep, very nice.   8-)

It's got its flaws, though...  It CERTAINLY ain't worth $6k.

1) He deleted the front turn signals, but he kept the stock headlight ears so he's got a couple of open holes.  He took off the reflectors, too.  Should've just swapped to the '71-'73 CB500 ears.

2) The front brake line is original from the factory.  The metal tubing into the caliber appears to have been bent.  The master cylinder was replaced, but the rest is original.  Should've got the braided stainless and upgraded to a better caliper.  Stock ones weren't very good...

3) Honda badges on the gas tank and alternator cover (left side) aren't properly painted.  I guess the gas tank could've been a style choice?

4) Original swingarm grease fittings...  those'll pop out the first time you actually try to lube it up.  ::)

5) The paint has been scraped off/messed up above the right rear mounting tab for the seat pan/rear fender.

6) He didn't even put rearsets on it!  The seating position is probably a bit awkward.

7) Battery charger pigtie is hanging out from under the left side of the seat.  Ought not that be tucked away neatly?

8) The light/rear fender fiasco was already mentioned...

9) There's some hodge-podge welded on to the kickstand so that it stops against the exhaust instead of fabbing a proper kickstand stop.

10) RFY shocks are the bargain brand, even cheaper than used stock.  Nice and...  squishy...

11) Old, stock cables minus the throttle...  and the speedo cable that isn't hooked up into the housing on the right of the front wheel is just zip-tied to the fork!  Also, that housing needs to be capped off to prevent things from getting in there, interfering with the wheel...

12) I can see at LEAST a couple of nuts on the front disc that don't have the locking tab bent against them...  at all...

13) Paint spray on the VIN badge...  Is it that hard to tape it off?

14)  Could he not be bothered to clean up the stock handlebar controls?

15) Spliced wires next to the horn... Who doesn't love spliced wire?

16) Of course, the piece de resistance: velocity stacks.  I bet the A/F mixture is all OVER the place, and it only gets worse at speed.  Without something to even out the air flow, 1 & 4 will always get more air than 2 & 3

Oh, I'm sorry...  I'm nit picking...  but as a classic Honda SOHC4, for $6K that bike should be a lot better than it is.

Oh, and while I'm nitpicking, someone should tell the guy with the old, red Toyota pickup to fix his license plate.  It's just HANGIN around!   ;D

Yeah, I get a little miffed when high priced "nice" CB's that aren't really done.  Sure, some of those were petty, but others like the front brakes, the locking tabs, the grease zerks, the old cables...  What does that say about the quality of the build?  For that price, he DEFINITELY should've opened up the engine at LEAST to replace the primary chain (which can stretch enough to eat through the casing after 20K miles).  While you're in there check out the shift forks to make sure the middle one isn't badly marred and replace the 40 yr old seals - especially the valve seals.

The gas filler neck looks like they tried, poorly, to continue the stripe pattern around the neck.  The rear fender/seat is hand made fiberglass, and instead of properly rounding it out around the seat he just cut a few diagonal lines.  Should've finished it properly.

My other bike is a 1973 Honda CB500.  I've spent a LOT of my time on the Honda SOHC4 forums and learned a lot.  Seeing all of the guys over there do such great work, guys like this who just want to pretty up a bike and make some cash kinda grind my gears.  I've done a lot of work to her, but I won't be able to finish her until I'm out of the Army.  Then I'll have the money, and maybe even the time.

To put things in a lighter mood:  I'm not saying the stripes look bad, but polka dots look nice, too.   ;)

I picked up a '71 cb500

http://www.savageriders.com/verslagen/Honda/Honda-day1.jpg

So far I've managed to wash it, put new tires on, replace the chain, clean the carbs and get it running.  the front brake was frozen, the rear was missing the brake arm pivot, so no brakes.  I've acquired the parts, but not the time.

Post by HondaLavis on 08/09/13 at 14:41:44

Vers, it'll run better if you connect that hanging spark plug lead.   ;D

That's a gorgeous bike to start with, though!  Tank looks good - at least from this angle - you have 1 if not both side covers, which are a pain to find.  Good looking seat, rack, turn signals, engine paint...  A wash will do wonders for how that looks.  Do you only have the speedo?  Any idea on mileage?  There are a thousand other questions to ask, but I'd only make myself look worse...

Have you looked through forums.sohc4.net?  If you think the savage forum is a wealth of knowledge, then the SOHC4 forum is the goldmine. ;)

Title: NOT PC... you've been warned...
Post by WD on 08/09/13 at 15:00:38

That 500 needs to go on a diet. Turn signals, side covers, seat, fenders, exhaust, bore it out...  Too much clutter.  ;)

I've already forgotten what the thread was about...

Look familiar?  ::)

Good idea, serow.  The 750 that WD posted is WAY too hot for work!

You should see some of the other stuff in my attachments folder... that 750 is nothing...  ;)

I've got a few too spicy for Do The Ton or even Intruder Alert's Back Room section...  ;D

Does that mean I CAN or CAN'T put up the ones with shirts made of paint...  :-/

You only need like 12 wires on a points fired CB inliner... not counting the charging system mess. Start cutting.  ;D

I think the bike is beautiful. The CB400 is known in certain circles as being the first American Café Racer. I always wanted to get a CB400 and do something similar.

Old_rider:  you talkin about this little guy?  It's the dummy light!  Indicators for flasher, neutral, oil presure, and high beams. In the US, the 750 had those lights inlaid in the gauges.  Not sure about the UK, though.  You usually see those indicator boxes on 500's and 650's.

Vers:  Yeah, that headlight bucket is a serious rat's nest

For CB's, I love the stock look.  If I did anything to her, she'd be a sleeper.  8-)
