I remember seeing this ages ago on this site. Took me ages to find it again as it was actually a link to another forum.

Looking at making something like this for my rear shocks. But.. I can't quite understand how it works. In the picture.. once you have compressed the spring and got the top hat on. How do you then get the wood off?

I believe that is what the step down is for on the adjustable side, the cap and the top hat are two different sizes. You are using the cap to compress the spring and remove the top hat. I think a metal top would be better, i'm just not sure how well plywood would work of if the pressure is not that much.

so it must compress the spring using just the outer edges of the cap?

(which means if you didn't plan on running the caps the whole idea won't work)

Yup it uses the cap to compress the spring, I suppose you could step the holes to just compress the spring. Or make two different ones, one to remove the top hat with using the chrome cap to depress it, then one to compress it using the spring only if that's the way you want it. Thing is, with the top hat hold down the spring?

Once the top is disassembled, just decompress the tool and the spring and hats should come off the shock. ;)

I think it looks a bit better without the caps.

SALB, yes this works to disassemble the shock easily enough, it's the re-assembly which I'm trying to work out, especially without the caps.. :-?

Make the top end out of a piece of wood that big enough to cut a slot in so the shock can slip out the side. Make that side big enough to have a piece of metal strap bolted across the slot for the compression part of the job.
