I put on a new Metzeler ME 880 Marathon on my rear. I have @ 300 miles on it thus far. My question is, why does my bike handle so much better?
Before the road "bumps" would really push my bike around, especially seams paralleling my direction of travel would really get squirrely.....
Gotta say the extra $$$ was well spent, so much so I think I'll get the front too, even tho my tread is still pretty good up there.

The stock tire set is garbage the day it is popped out of the mold. Anything is a noticeable improvement, premium tires drastically so. Enjoy wearing it out.

Is that wider than stock? How wide of a tire can this bike take?

aren't most oem parts garbage? I am wondering as well. stock is a 140/80-15, can a 140/90-15 fit? any bigger with out getting too crazy?

The 140/90 will fit perfectly, and according to the techies will make your speedo read more accurately. The 140/80 is an orphan/weird size.

I really am shocked at how bad the stock IRC tires are...
When I rode a DP bike,... I swapped to an IRC tire that was much better than stock...
They aren't a bad company,.. that tire just ain't good on this bike...
It puzzles me...
Metzler's are good high mileage tire... they have very thick tread...
I hope you ride a lot... because that tread will go 20k + miles... the problem is twofold...
1. ...you need to burn up that tread before the compound dries out... 4 to 6 years...
2. ...tread that deep will wear a flatspot in the middle before it is used up... (that's okay, if you are primarily a highway commuter,... but, if you are a canyon carver... that flat spot will create a ridge to overcome on every right or left bank...
MC tires are not like car tires,.. they need to to keep an even transition from centerwall to sidewall... otherwise, you'll get that "lift, then fall" action when going into turns... with a low traction edge to overcome in every transition...
Bike tires always wear the center tread out first...

That said,.. Metz.. really are the premium high mileage tire...
Enjoy,... and ride yer' brains out... (not literally)... ;D...

...

With the 140/90-15, do you have to adjust your shocks at all?

Title: Re: Tires

depends,, if youre not bottoming out, not rubbing grooves in the sidewall on bolt heads, no.,.

PS: I am loving my new tire from WD!!!

Good ole Dunlop Qualifier

I tried to get  a matching front.. but they only go to 18" ( not the 19" we need) They had a Shinko 100/90/19 for $66, so I snagged that. So all new rubber for me. I really want to replace the shocks.. but I just don't know if $250 is happening anytime soon.

I'm thinking about replacing my stock tires with metzelers 880s. The stock tires are not worn out yet but are not wearing well. I keep the pressure adjusted but I guess they are just cheap tires.

Are the Metzelers 880 tires tuebless or 67H and 57H tube type or does it matter.

My bike has 140/90, the registry paper say also it should have that.

Good to go. They are an either/or rated tire as far as the tube, not sure on the speed rating, tread wear, etc.

Yes you can, but your speedometer will still read wrong. Anyway, here you go, $154 plus shipping and fondling...http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/31/401/6127/ITEM/Metzeler-ME-880-Marathon-Touring-Rear-Tire.aspx

Stock size 140/80-15 is readily available, but they are not always included in Metzeler ads. And yes it seems the 140/90-15s are more accurate on the speedometer.

Apache, I heard Metzeler is coming out with an even better tire but don't know what sizes are available. The numbers preceding the "H" are basically load ratings and are easily looked up. The "H" is actually a handling rating, or as some say, a speed rating. It should handle and perform well up to 118 mph.

To see if you are overloaded, check the load ratings, add them together for each tire. Then add your weight and 352 lbs for the motorcycle plus a pillion rider or backpack and subtract your load from the load rating. A negative number indicates you are overloaded.  :)

I have had a set of Metzler 880 tires on my S40 for a few years now. They'll probably dry rot before I wear them out. I just put a set of Metzler 888 tires on my V Star 1100. The 888 tires are supposed to get 20% more tread life than the 880 tires.

I had a 110-90-19 on the front for a couple years that I ordered by mistake.  never felt like it was a problem while riding on it , but I remember that when I put the 100-90-19 back on it felt like an improvement in control.

(I did like the looks of the bigger tire, but I also had to modify the fender attachment to fit it in)

I wouldn't recommend putting on the 150/90/15.  I have the 140/90 on mine and I had to put on cap-head bolts so they wouldn't rub the fender.  I also had to take the saddle bag supports off as well.  Excluding that, they are absolutely wonderful.  I have put on 2500 miles and they have a whole lot of tread left.  I guessing I should be at least 15k out of mine.

OK guys, I need tires, both front and rear, I am a big guy as well, 270. I see everyone loves the Metzelers, long lasting and all of that, but they are about twice as much as the Dunlops at Ron Ayers right now. (140 90 15) for the rear.

What about the front one? Don't see a matching Metzeler, (100 90 19) so what should I do? Any suggestions? And those are the right sizes, right?

Both of my trucks need tire too, but the way. :-/ Not sure how that happened.

Thanks.

Title: Re: Tires
Post by pgambr on 01/31/14 at 15:33:49

They should offer a matching front tire as well.  I think I had to order them individually as opposed to a combo set.  It was a bit bigger than I expected but will work great.  The old tire had a bit more breathing room between the fender.

Title: Re: Tires
Post by prechermike on 02/04/14 at 05:47:26

I can save about $50 getting the tires from Ron Ayers as opposed to JP cycles, not sure about shipping though, but Ron Ayers is only about 35 miles from me and I go to Greenville every week or so anyway, so I can pick the tires up at the store with no problem (I guess I can do that).

My question is they only have the metzeler 888 in the front size and the 880 in the rear size. I have been told not to mix tires, is this a problem? Treads look a lot alike to me.

Thanks guys!

My wife and I ride our S40 double up and we had No rub with the stock tire but when we put on a Dunlop D404 in the 140/90-15, we've got a pretty serious RUB marks! Looks like were going to have to go back to the OEM IRC  tire so it won't rub, RATS. Like the way the Dunlop feels but the rub mark scares me a bit.  :'(

Replace the stock bolts with button head bolts.
And if you have the saddlebag brackets, place them between the fender and rail, add a few washers to the other bolt hole.

I got the 140/80H -15 Dunlop K555 Rear Tire for my S40..no rubbing that I can tell when we both ride.  Good tire handles great but like the others said speedo more acurate with the 140/90-15 go figure since 140/80-15 is OEM size.  Good tip from Versy too on modifying your bolts too that works well..

For those who needs new tyres, check out the "Full bore usa m66 tour king" - I just bought a set of these and they seems to be really good tyres.. The material is soft and doesn't have that cheap nylon feel..
Here in denmark they only cost about half the price than the metzelers, and the tread pattern is allmost identical.. I bought a 140/90-15 and 100/90-19.. Here's a video :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SFjac29QYw

On this page you can see the price differences, the metzelers are on page 2 :

I haven't been on the road yet with these tyres, so I don't know how they feel, but I definitely think they are worth checking out

OK, I ordered the 880s from JP cycles, had to pay tax at Ron Ayers, got a matched set here, they arrived this morning. The trouble is, it is 31* starting to snow, sleet, freezing rain, etc, and I have work to do. I am planning to put them on myself, we'll see how that goes.

I changed my tires myself. It was somewhat of a struggle..  :P
Get some big tire irons and some big clamps to press down the tyre, so you can get it off center, and get those sides off of the rim.

When putting on the new tyres, you need some of that slicky stuff they use at the tyre changing workshops.. I've heard soap water can be used too, but I think that pro stuff is the best way to go..

I've been looking at Metzelers for my bike too. For the bike the 880 like you've got, but for the front, I can get the newest version, the 888 which is apparently even a further improvement over the already well-rated 880. The 888 Marathon is not yet available in our rear tire size as of yet, at least not on my Canadian website...canadasmotorcycle.com. Just out of curiosity, how do my quoted Canadian prices measure up with what you guys are spending? Front tire is 132 dollars and the rear is 160.
On another note, I've got almost 13000 miles on my original stock tires and the rear is due, but the front still looks great. I bought my 06 bike May 2013 with original tires barely used, and yes, I know about dried out compounds...but no checking, damage, etc. so will replace with new before spring, but I thought the stock tires handled well. Based on many on comments from the site, it seems I may not know what I'm missing in handling until I go with Metzelers. Your thoughts folks?

I have the 888 on the rear of my Speedmaster and LOVE it. Grips very well wet or dry. Only done a couple thousand k on it yet but shows no sign of wear. They have a slightly different profile to the 880, side wall appears slightly higher giving a flatter curve ti the tread. I certainly can use more of the tire than I could with the 880

IRC or Dunlop?

(they are both at a similar price point)

Thanks!

Check out Shinko 712's...  (nice looking, plenty sticky)...
Kenda's are good too...

Overall,... I'm most impressed with Shinko's...

Thanks..another question...does the "cap head bolt" modification apply primarily to Savages or bikes w/ saddlebag brackets?  When I look at my S40, the bolts are all regular hex head, and it looks like going to cap heads wouldn't accomplish much.  It looks the the item most in danger of hitting an overhead tire is the taillight wiring.

You shouldn't have to worry about that if you get the standard tire size.

Hey Rembrandt, I'm in Stirling, Ontario.  Maybe we will cross paths out riding after all this snow is gone.  I often ride up through Cambellford, Hastings, Keene and up to Peterborough.  Back in December I bought two Dyna-Glide mufflers from a guy in Peterborough (only need one - ha, ha) that I plan on installing when weather warms a bit.  I plan to buy two new tires myself for the spring season.  Bike is 2003 Savage with 19,000Km on it.
Cheers.

Crossed 13,500 miles and changed the stock to the 880 yesterday (Monday 17th). Rode to work this morning and the ride was smoother, my goal, though, is to get more miles than the stock tire. I was gonna swap out the rear brakes at the same time but they still had 40% of the pad left on the shoe so I left them for next time.
