Title: Black means what?
Post by Toroso on 07/31/13 at 06:52:24

My bike seems to run pretty good in my opinion. But I have noticed that the brake lever on the rear wheel has black soot from the exhaust and when I had the header off to change the tensioner, I noticed the port was black with soot as well. What does this tell me about how well it is tuned?

Carbs arent constant, the air/fuel mix varies as the slide opens & different circuits are utilized,, black is rich, so, somewhere, its rich,, maybe everywhere,, but I doubt it,,

Pull the spark plug and see what color it is, if it's also black you could be running rich, the plug is the best way to tell.

Rich is what I thought too. But it runs very well. I was running premium gas and I have noticed after going to regular it has started to poot a little at shutoff.

Modern fuel burns black.....even with a good mix on the carb.  Back in the old days of good leaded gasoline you coulld look for a nice dark grey color on the exhaust......but no more.  Even my fuel injected car that is compuiterized and runs an ideal mixture all the time has a sooty black exhaust.

If you're not seeing clouds out the exhaust,.. just when it collects on the brakearm (whatnot)... it's fine...

Use regular gas,... premium is waste in this bike... ;)...
