Title: Bike is stalling, Please help a newbie out!
Post by bdrums71 on 07/30/13 at 13:24:47

Hey guys, i just bought a 2001 Savage with 2040 miles on it last week, I'm really new to bikes and don't know much about how a motorcycle works, just learned to ride. Anyway, i do know that the bike seems to be running pretty hot, flames shot out of the back the other day and i figured that probably wasn't good. Yesterday i wrapped the pipes and took it out for a cruise last night , about 4 minutes into the ride and hitting about 40 mph the bike started jerking back and forth and stalled, i managed to get it home but it stalled about every 1/4 mile. i put a gallon of gas in it (super) and put it on the battery tender. a few hours later i took it back out for about a half hour, everything worked fine. woke up this morning and went riding for about a half hour, everything seemed normal,(it does backfire often but its been doing that since i got it), then I came home for some lunch and went back out and about 3 mins into the ride the bike stalled again, and couldn't get it to start back up for a half hour, all the electronics work but it felt like the bike wouldnt idle at all, went i got it to run again it seemed fine and i made it home. also just note that the bike stalls out when i put the choke on since i got it, any comments and advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

drums,
I see where the bot is off line so i will step in. The red text in his reply is actually a link to the step by step process to test the petcock. Give it a click and see what you think.

Good hunting

We all were once, drums, No sweat. Just don't ask about oil until you read the thread in the section above titled "4 Simple Answers." If you ask about oil after you read the thread, we will burn down your house. No, really, we will.  8-)

Good hunting

Leaning out, then running out of gas.

Gas level down again, leans out, then runs outa gas again.

common problem, check your petcock.

thanks for the response vers, the thing is there was plenty of gas in the tank each time, just took it for a ride and it stalled after riding two blocks, i adjusted the petcock to prime and it runs normal.
would wrapping my exhaust have anything to do with this?

This sounds like the problem my outboard motors have when the little diaphragm in the fuel pump starts to wear out, the motor will start to die and as soon as i squeeze the primer bulb it picks back up again.

If it runs normal on prime, sounds like you just identified the problem to be your fuel petcock.  Go to your local Yamaha dealer and get 5LP-24500-01 (yamaha part #) petcock.  It's a direct replacement and read the thread about installing the raptor petcock.

The part'll be somewhere around $25.

Oh, and do the test first just to make sure.

No, test your petcock

also i just realized i have a ton of gas in my oil now, is this also related to the petcock issue or is this a whole other nuts storm?

Whooowie, you got you a BAD BAD vac petcock.

Change your oil and replace the vac petcock with a Raptor as per the link you were given earlier.

hey guys ran the petcock test, when i unplugged the vac line there wasnt any fuel coming out and couldnt really detect any moisture, but the prime and cap test worked, by bike felt really smooth in prime and stalled in the on position. i just order the raptor. i did notice that there is some oil and/or gas ( some sorta dark fluid) coming out of the breather hose( i think its called the breather hose, its the fat hose coming out the top of the engine) is this related to the petcock issue?

Title: Re: Bike is stalling, Please help a newbie out!
Post by Oldfeller on 07/31/13 at 14:40:22

No, that is the breather tube coming out of the top of the engin. It has a lot of oil blow by from the engine combustion process.

That fat breather hose had better still be attached to your airbox, if not, the top end of the engine will suck in a LOT of airborne grit. If your bike has a cone filter and no airbox, go to the nearest auto parts store and buy a little cone filter that fits the breather hose. The airbox has a drain line that empties between the engine and the rear tire, check it. If your crankcase filled up with fuel, you have a highly volatile bomb waiting to go off under your behind. I leave the drain line open on mine, have seen airbox fires on other models, it is not pretty, and you cannot put it out.

You might consider putting your location where most of us list it, somebody may be close enough to give you hands on tutorials. The Savage is a decent little bike, but it has a lot of quirks. All easily remedied, pretty much all written up in the tech section.

Throw your Clymer's manual away, buy some real tools and some reading glasses. There are forum members who have been riding and wrenching since the 1950s, some forum members have had our bikes longer than we care to admit (means we are getting older)...

Welcome aboard, pull up a chair.

hey, WD thanks for the warm welcome man! im learning alot from this site so far, you guys know what your doing. the breather hose is just flapping in the wind, the air box is no longer there, the pervious owner tried to turn it into a bobber and defiantly sacrificed safety/performance for looks

Title: Re: Bike is stalling, Please help a newbie out!
Post by WD on 07/31/13 at 16:25:50

Big breather hose just flapping... if you are in the USA, swing by Pep Boys or O'Reilly Auto Parts. Look in the "performance" section for a miniature K&N style filter. Trim the breather hose back to a length that pleases YOUR eye, and install the small filter. Your bike will thank you.

Seriously, what is your location? I've had lots of people by the house over the years, working on bikes ranging from 1915-2012 model years. I've been, to quote my wife, "destroying perfectly good motorcycles" for 26 years...  ;D

I despise stock motorcycles, unless they are factory rigid framed or plunger framed, with a springer or girder front end of some sort.

Exposed rear shocks and a hydraulic front end? I'm making it into something interesting.

I think I started "messing up" the Savage when it was two months or so old, paint was already fading, so, why not...

That was 5/05-12/06... had to predate that, I wasn't on the forum at all from late 04 to sometime in 06... been on it since , sometime in it's first year, Bert's forum was still around but in the process of going away. Was on Bert's forum from 4/98 until it went away...
