Title: Gas Longevity
Post by Igggy on 07/26/13 at 11:33:37

My thumper has been under wraps for over a month, and it may be another month before it's cool enough to ride here in Las Vegas. How long would you leave gas in the tank before draining and putting in fresh?

You must not have ethanol mixed in with your fuel over there is Sweden.

At a minimum you should put StaBil in your tank and then be sure to shut off the petcock (if you have a manual petcock), then open the screw and drain your float bowl.

Don't know if we have other gas then you have. But the XJ900 did run on gas that was 9 year. My Volvo 142, last time I did fill gas in it must be over 5 year and it do still run on the same gas when I have to move it.

I start worrying if it sits more than 2 or 3 months... if it's not older than 6 months, I drain it and add it to a full tank in my car... put fresh in the bike...
If it's been sitting more than 6 months, I use it to kill ants... ;D...

If there is no possibility of it heating and cooling repeatedly (which could lead to condensation) I would use no gas older than 5 years.

Condensation can be a problem. The XJ900 start to leak gas after a couple of days. I had to weld the tank. Took me two days :(

Add Startron to the tank to neutralize the ethanol and treat it like real gasoline. If it starts to have a varnish smell... you waited too long.
