Title: Belt drive switch
Post by Jack_650 on 07/21/13 at 13:58:26

I seem to recall reading on here a few years back that the Harley belts are a bit longer than ours, have the same teeth and are a bit narrower. Does their rear gear wheel have a larger diameter? Just wondering. It would be nice to up the ratio while keeping all the pluses of he belt drive. Just seems like there should be some other options out there somewhere to exploit.

The Harley belts are completely different.  Narrower, different tooth spacing, Harley belts have round teeth....no idea on length.

Some Kawasaki bikes used a similar pulley and belt combination.  The EN450/454 and a KZ400.  I believe the belts are 4 teeth longer on the Kawasaki's.  The pulley from the EN bikes are 25 teeth instead of our 23 teeth and with some work can be adapted.  I am currently working on adapting a KZ400 rear pulley.....it is going to require redrilling the mounting holes, making a sleeve for the hub, and maybe moving the pulley in or outl

This thread has some good information...although some of the earliest comments might be outdated.

You sure on that Dave? I've never seen a KZ400 with a belt drive, only the KZ440 and 454LTD...

400 was the good one, had a kicker.

Nope....not sure....I was in the car typing and trying to do it from memory.  I can be more specific tomorrow when I am at my office...I got it written down!

if the repair book by Kawasaki EN-450 is correct, then the drive belt which is set there has 135 teeth. the Savage -133 teeth. rear pulleys have 68 teeth on both motorcycles, front pulleys are 23 and 25 teeth(Savage and Kawasaki)
in General, you can replace the drive belt from Kawasaki on Savage, but you will need to install the front and the pulley with 25 teeth..

If you search thru the kawa bikes starting with the EN440, a few use belts that is similar to ours, not exactly but close enough to be compatible.  And longer.  The EN440 (I'll have to look it up) was the shortest, but about a 1" longer.  I scored both pulleys and a belt for about $50.  I forgot how I found the belt lengths, possibly thru the OEM suppliers, some will list number of teeth.

The tooth count of the kawa belt I got is 137
ours is 133
that's about 1.1" longer between centers.

OK....I am at the office and I have some actual data:

The Kawasaki KZ750 LTD is the bike I was thinking of, and the rear sprocket is 65 tooth and ours is 68 tooth.  It will take some work to make it fit.  THe Kawasaki KZ750 LTD belt is 137 tooth while our is 133 tooth.  The correct year for this part is around 1983.
