Title: The Wisdom of Frank Zappa
Post by Starlifter on 07/20/13 at 19:46:26

Wow what insight, and this from 30 or more years ago.

When a reporter for the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command interviewed Frank Zappa for the commands news syndicate, the story was held by a superior who demanded that Zappa – (who had been rather hard on the army) – answer one more question: just who does he think will defend the country without the army?

Zappa’s reply: “From what? The biggest threat to America today is it’s own federal government…. Will the Army protect anybody from the FBI? The IRS? The CIA? The Republican Party? The Democratic Party?....The biggest dangers we face today don’t even need to sneak past our billion dollar defense system….they issue the contracts for them.” The interview was not run.

...more from Zappa...

"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater." - Frank Zappa

Can't find much fault in what he said.

I remember reading/hearing this years ago, but can't seem to find it anywhere, but it goes something like this:" Democracy will fall on its own accord without a shot ever being fired."
The context I recall was a communist/socialist leader (who, I don't remember but I think he was from the last century) was talking about the press without any constraints applied to it would allow for its own mass propaganda that would crumble our democracy as we know it (knew it then).

This prompts a question: Should the press be adversaries in reporting ALL stories that have potential applications to our way of life, or only the ones they personally disagree with, and promoting the ones they like, as they appear to do now.

I believe the media has capitalized GREATLY under the current conditions of separating parties/people, as it cost HUGE sums to promote (campaign) now... to a point that those in office govern from a POV that will generate the most revenue (appeasing the press, etc) as opposed to what they might really believe (is best for the country).

3rd or 4th grade I had a teacher who said

America will go down w/o a shot being fired.

ill bet i was the only kid who actually grasped what she meant. i became aware of " things that would indicate she was right" , from waste/fraud right there in the school to an ever increasing debt for the nation. our foreign policy is disastrous for our people.,,no matter what bunch is in charge, always downhill..

I never was a fan of Franks music. Didn't have much of a melody, or maybe it was over my head and I couldn't understand it. When he spoke I listened. The guy was a genius. There's a few interviews of him on You Tube and they're definitely worth watching. He was one of the great minds of the 20th century. He never did anything for money, he did what he wanted to do because he liked it. He did an album with the London Symphony and didn't press but 1000 copies. He did it because he wanted to, not to make money. RIP Frank, I'll never forget you.

JOG-
America probably will go down at some point, as no nation, nor empire, nor any other political system has lasted forever, nor will one.  Unfortunately, that's a lesson that history has taught us.
Whether you begin with the ancient Egyptians, the Babylonians, ancient Greece ( although it wasn't really a nation, but only a collection of city-states ), then the Roman Empire, the Holy Roman Empire, then probably the British Empire, Hitler's dream of a Thousand Year Reich, the Soviet Union - all have come to an end.  Some through warfare, some through internal decay, and some, like the British Empire and the Soviet Union specifically because time and circumstances simply caused them to become passé.
Remember the old saying, "the sun never sets on British soil"?  I suppose that is still true if you consider Commonwealth nations like Australia and New Zealand to be "British soil", but that is hardly true in reality.
As a realist, I recognize that the U.S. will not last forever because nothing does.
That doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to preserve the greatest nation on Earth for as long as we can, however.  I still haven't figured out what would be better.

America COULD be the record shattering nation. Look at Tally Sticks, that currency lasted hundreds of years, far outlasting any monopolized central banking scheme.
these other countries that grew & crashed dont HAVE to be a model, they could be used to see what not to do.,.
our policies are being driven by forces that simply do not have the best interest for us in mind. that has to be obvious to any observer by now.,

JOG -
Gotta run and shut down for the night, but our maim problem is internal decay and deviating from the capitalistic principles that made our country great in the first place.
More in a couple of days - I'll be on the road until Wed.
