Title: Trip Odometer
Post by dan49829 on 07/20/13 at 13:18:04

I've seen this mentioned before, but not that anyone came up with a solution (a serious one).

http://shop.rycamotors.com/mini_speedometer.html

This link is for a mini speedometer with trip odometer for $50, mounting bracket is $40.  I'm sure there are others available.

Has anyone installed one of these (or others?), how did it work (any specific problems?), and if so, what did you do with the stock speedometer and (assuming) empty cavity in the middle of your fuel tank?

Most of us just buy a combination type luggage lock from the Dollar store and attach to the bars... set the combination to the mileage at fill-up time...
... hanging on leather strap next to clock...

I went with one from Dime City Cycles and replaced the stock speedo with a voltmeter.

Thanks!  Never had a bike without a trip odometer, so having a hard time adjusting!

Toesnoes, yours looks amazing!  Do you mind sharing how you installed the voltmeter in the speedo opening - is that rubber around it?

Do you know if I would be able to install one of the $50 mini-speedos

http://shop.rycamotors.com/mini_speedometer.html

in the speedo opening instead of the voltmeter?

Thank you again for the suggestions!  Maybe I'll strap my old cell phone on the handlebars in the meantime.

you mite could install a speedo down there, but looking down & focusing there takes eyes off the road a lot longer than id like.

I live in a rural area, and main objective is to have a trip odometer.  I'd rather use the available space rather than mount a second speedometer on the handlebars.

I'd love to be able to mount an aftermarket speedo with odometer in that space using the existing cable and wiring.

Veypor? IIRC, some have found them to be the ticket

Thank you!  They look pretty high tech... and expensive!

Based on suggestions I received here, I now have a small luggage lock on my handlebars for an odometer, but actually the least expensive and most creative was the suggestion to fill up at the 100 mile mark!  I filled up at 612 today!

Here's my solution, which you may get a laugh out of! Wife and I are long-time bikers (Specialized and Novara!) and have used a variety of cycle computers. I picked up a cheap Bell model from Walmart ($12) and fitted it to my S40. Works great, more accurate than that in-tank disaster Suzuki put in. I use the clock, the speedo and the trip odo. I mounted the unit behind the front brake reservoir to protect it from wind and debris. Also found out the stock speedo has a 10% hi error. A riding buddy went one up and mounted a gps unit, expensive but tops!

+1 on the bicycle speedo.  I have that on one bike and a Vapor on the other one.
On the bicycle speedo, just DO NOT GET the wireless kind.  The motorcycle puts out a lot of static that can interfere with the signal.

Title: Re: Trip Odometer
Post by arteacher on 07/22/13 at 13:05:37

My solution is to get a grease pencil, and write the mileage + 100 (or your actual range on a full tank) when you fill up on the mirror. It is really easy to see, and does not interfere with your use of the mirror. When the odometer is getting close to the number on the mirror, look for a gas station. Cost is only the grease pencil, and you can't get much cheaper than that.

Post by dan49829 on 07/22/13 at 16:44:22

I ordered a Sigma bicycle computer, but it looked so tacky that I gave it to my better half to put on her pedal bike (of course the luggage lock hanging from my handlebars doesn't exactly look badass either!)  Suzuki probably saved less than 5 bucks by omitting something most of us have come to take for granted.

With all the Savage/S40's out there I'm surprised no one has come up with an aftermarket replacement that fits in the tank.  The best option I've seen so far is the one ToesNose posted, but looks expensive and time consuming.

I've seen aftermarket speedos advertised for less than $50 online, but don't have time to experiment with installation options.  Was hoping someone had already been down that road.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Once I realized I didnt have one I just accepted it. Id rather have one, but, ehh,, Ill live.. the grease pencil or luggage lock would be my answer, if I just couldnt tolerate it. Its just not that hard to stop & get gas, I can look in the tank & see if im close to hittin reserve. If I was at all worried Id get a pint, ss, screw on lid & put some pushmoline in it,.

According to the internet, my Bell F12 runs around that price.  I don't remember what I paid for it

The only issue I have with it is that it tends to get a bit confused if you go over 75mph.  But, I don't normally go that fast anyway.

Hey BobR - Sorry to take so long to respond. I bought a Bell Dashboard 100 12-function Cycle computer at Walmart for $12.97. Our pedal powered bikes have much more expensive models, but I wanted to try something unique and didn't want to invest much in a failure! I guessed that a wireless type would have problems due to the electronic ignition. I made a backet for the magnet out of coat hanger wire and zip-ties, mounted it in the spokes. The pick-up and computer bracket were mounted with zip ties.

HD, mind posting a pic of your mounting setup for magnet, pickup and placement of the controller on the bars?

Anyway, could one of you guys to put up a picture of the mounting you did for your bicycle odo? I'm interested in how ya'll put the magnet on the spokes and what wheel size you chose. I have the Bell 100 bicycle odo that i'm trying to install and it says to place it "2mm" for best results", um that's kinda close.

Did yours move down the spokes after installing?

Get a couple of rare earth magnets.  Stack them, and just put them on the rim.  They won't fly off.
Mount the sensor up under the fender on the right side.

No worries dan - I've also been looking at this issue as wanna change tanks.
Them streetfighter types really know how to mix and max their parts! Not my cup of tea style wise but they know their stuff, I'll give em that.

My tank is trashed and have wondered about alternatives.

Do you know if an Intruder Speedo would work on an S40?

Thank you again!

Speaking of mileage- any city riders here?  I'm getting about 37mpg, which seems low to me.  I'm *NOT* riding particularly hard, and I'm not sitting in traffic for unusually long periods.

Title: Re: Trip Odometer
Post by old_rider on 08/08/13 at 09:30:48

Added the Bell 100 to the wifes savage yesterday. It has a small delay reading wise, but that might be due to the fact I used a different magnet than what came with it. I left it at the factory settings of 2124, because the 19" setting was off by 10mph.

We shall see what happens with it, so far looks to be a good buy at $12 and easy install, wish I had some silver zip ties tho, wrapped around the fork leg looks kinda cheesy, but I think she will like not running too low on gas vrs knowing when she needs to fuel up.

Plus....I can keep track of her speeds....LOL  ;)

Here's my avg economy, with prices paid per gallon. (I need to ride more, the number of miles ridden in the past year is pathetic) My max is 45-46mpg when I've been riding longer rides vs my average rides as described below...

Most my rides are to/from work which is less than 4 miles each way. Average day is to work, home for lunch, back to work, then home so maybe 16 miles per day in four short trips that don't exceed 35mph posted speed limit.

To set the Bell accurately, you need to measure the circumference of the front wheel.  Easiest way I've found is to put a chalk mark on the tire and the pavement, then roll the bike forward until the chalk mark on the tire is a the bottom again.  Measure distance between the two marks and convert to mili-meters.

The delay is not from the magnet difference.  It's just that the bicycle computer does not need to update so quickly.. on a bicycle.  It is still counting the revolutions just fine.

I get in the high 30s mpg in London traffic. Thought I more jetting to do but seems I'm not too far off normal.

Title: Re: Trip Odometer
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 08/09/13 at 05:39:03

Dude, Ive got a Stage 1 cam, fatter jets & a Supertrapp w/ 14 disks & I am not scared of twisting the grip & I get 49 MPG in US gallons. My daughter gets 51. Imperial gallons are bigger. You get another 1.6+ pints. Youre rippin thru gas in a place where gas costs waaaay too much to waste, You should at least be getting 60 miles / Imperial Gallon,

OHHH, Wail,, I just saw LOndon TRaffic,, I have no idea how much youre putting along in 1st or 2nd, which isnt at all good for mileage.
Are there back roads that may be further to ride but less time crawling along?

Title: Re: Trip Odometer
Post by strang on 08/09/13 at 10:48:19

I think you're probably right jog - having read the new o2 sensor tuning threads I think I need to swap around my jetting. Was just trying to convince myself otherwise.
Currently I've got the bigger pilots and smaller mains. The o2 thread implies the opposite might be ideal.
I've got an endless list of diy stuff at the moment but in a month or so I look forward to chasing 40mpg if I can  :)
I do a lot of very short journeys and in central London traffic so I would expect to get probably the worst mpg on this site. Still, I'm up for improving as yep, we get stitched up over here on the fuel.

Just remember, its a Torque motor, you can shift up at pretty low speeds as long as youre not trying to accelerate hard. Lower RPM, loafing along saves on gas, BUT, in traffic, at low speed, Im usually in a low enough gear that will allow me to gas it & go w/o needing to downshift. Im just more comfortable if I know I can cram the gas to it if I need to,,
