Title: It's tire time
Post by 223fan on 07/20/13 at 08:04:54

The tires on my bike are officially shot. What are you all running size/brand and where did you get them? What  brands do I need to stay away from? I assume only tube tires for the stock rims.  Thanks

There aren't hardly any bad brands of tire...
Best to buy based on how much you ride... get a tire that you will wear out in 3 to 5 years... that way it won't dry out...
You can use tube or tubeless rated tires,... but you will need a tube in them...
Get a 90' tire valve on your rear tube,... have it installed pointing to the brake side... that will make airing up easier...

I have used Dunlop 404's, and currently have a Shinko712 on the rear,... Kenda Cruz on the front...

Get Metzler's if you ride over 10k miles per year...
Otherwise, go cheaper...

Ditto on mileage mattering.  New tubes and rim strips is cheap insurance.

I have Michelin Commander and they are not good on gravel roads. On asphalt they are nice.

I like my shinko712 and it was cheap to boot.

I have compared prices everywhere and if you have a Pro Caliber close by check them out. They have no markup on tires. I bought a Dunlop 404 and I think I paid $120 for tire and mounting and balancing. Great tire with lots of wear.

You mean this one?   Nobody but me ever updated their tire, so it kinda lost it's purpose along the years .....

I can use a tube in a tubeless tire? That would make it a lot easier. Thanks for the tip on the valve stem.

Put a Shinko712 on the rear. Got it for $95 installed with new tube at a local shop.

Ayyyup,, A tubeless tire WILL hold air w/o a tube, on a rim so designed.
They dont explode like a car goin off a cliff in a 60's B movie if ya slap a tube in them & mount them on a leaky, spoked, rim

Motorycle Superstore is having a tire sale.  Here is the discount coupons they sent me:

They have free shipping for orders over $ 100 - but I have to ship them to a friend in Ohio as they recently opened an outlet in KY.....and now they charge me sales tax if I ship to my home.

Because the factory tire is an anomaly, doesn't fit very many models besides the Savage/S40. Pretty low production runs.

Just get a 140/90-15, the speedometer will be closer to accurate, the choices are much better, the tires are usually cheaper...

Want hard to find? It should have shipped with a 130/90-15...http://www.bikebandit.com/130-90-15-street-motorcycle-tires/n1348-4294966307-4294966933

Well I got the Metzeler - ME 880 Marathon as I liked the rain rating, which is very important here where I live, and as a daily commuter I think it will be a wiser purchase. I talked to the "preferred" installer, who I can swing by after work next week and he'll put it on, w/ new tube, balance, etc, $75. They are shipping directly to him......AND, I earned some SUPER bucks too, now I have to buy more stuff  ;D

BTW, they had the 140/80 15 too, so I don't need to worry bout rub, WHICH....means I can have TWO bowls of ice cream now   :-*

What size tires should you get,if you don't want to have to adust your shocks or anything ? If you get the same sizes as the stock tires in other brands ,are they the same size basicly?

Title: Re: It's tire time
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/23/13 at 21:07:51

Ive never had the stock size after it wore out. The Dunlop 140/90 has never caused me any hassles & did get the speedo better & is a bit taller, so, ya get just a few bits of a foot further down the road when it roills once,,
I understand someone in the Pacific NorthWET wanting the best wet weather tire, I chose the Dunlop in East Texas, but, if I was gonna put another on, Id give the Metzler a try,,

Had a Dunlop 404 on the Vulcan 800A and a Dunlop Qualifier on Lisa's 800 Intruder. They handle the PNW's wet weather just fine. The old Cheng Shin on the Savage handles the wet fine as well, it's an old Metzeler tread pattern.

Swapped the Dunlop on Lisa's bike for a Kenda 130/90-15, it handled Seattle area rain fine as well.

Any tire that will fit a Suzuki 800 Intruder rear wheel is perfect for the Savage. I just like the slightly better handling of a 90/90-19 x 130/90-15 combo better. And on the Intruder with its 80/90-21 front, the 130/90-15 is even better.

With the Dunlap 140/90, do you have to adjust your shocks?
