Title: How much stator winding coating?
Post by WD on 07/20/13 at 07:31:08

Stator case is off my bike to be cleaned and painted. Most of the stator windings have copper showing through the yellow coating material... Normal on the Savage or is it replacement time? The windings do appear to still have the lacquer under the potting material but...

The last year it was licensed it ate 3 batteries. Sulfated the plates up solid.

I'll try and get a pic later. Of the windings and the carbon tracking in the rotor section of the unit.

Pretty sure the thing is cooked...  :-?

If you're over 25k miles,.. might as well put in a new one...

I've seen some with a light caramel coating, others with pale green, and some with clear... so, it's hard to tell by coating...
...(seems like they use whatever is laying around)...
Best to tell with a meter,.. but, if you don't to go in there again, swap it out...

do not quite understand the essence of the matter, but it seems the problem is that you saw the color change of the stator windings of the generator. right? I don't know what finish cover stator winding factories Suzuki... at my practice, caramel color of the windings is more than normal. if the stator winding not become chocolate or black, or no external damages, then in principle there is no reason for concern. you can even measure the resistance of winding(they must show about 0.5 Ohms, if I am not mistaken). the main thing is that testimonies were identical.

Case is still open. I'll have to track down the testing procedure, although, by the smell the windings are shot. Kind of an overheated electric motor reek.

looks like overheated? not very happy... :( then you would probably have to check and voltage regulator. "eaten" batteries indicate it too...

Smells overheated, and the engine has not been fired off since 2010... still stank when I pulled the clutch side outer case last month.

Have had electrical glitches since the bike was purchased new in 98, so, not surprised if the stator is bad. Just annoyed, I have a built in 1948 automotive generator that still works like it is brand new.

Yup,.. it's having to run in hot engine oil that makes bike stat's burn up...

What oil? Case had a very faint sheen in a couple spots, but no typical oil staining. And it would show, the inside is some kind of rough, almost looks like a flawed casting it is so rough.  :-?
