Title: Rider Magazine August 2013
Post by red12049 on 07/15/13 at 17:10:39

Current edition of Rider Magazine, page 79, almost a full column tech tip about changing the vacuum petcock to a Raptor.  Also, a few nice words about our bikes.

Rick

Thats hilarious!

Now, which one of you glory hounds sent that in?

ORRR

You suppose they have someone there who just hunts down bike forums & hunts mods to use for filling those little empty spaces in the magazine?

That's my buddy Andy MacDonald that writes the Tech column for Rider...
I've been friends with Andy for near 20 years... He lives a couple of blocks from me...
He was checking out the mods on my bike few months ago and noticed the Raptor... (he was already very aware of the stock vac pet problems)...
So,.. I guess he wanted to add the info to his Tech column...

I told him about all the variety of customs bike you guys are building at SS.Com...
He's a big fan of simple machines, and classic bikes...

Kinda' neat that I got a little mention...
Now,.. I'm famous....
I may need a bigger helmet... :-?...

Neat find, Red... ;)...

If you need a Raptor Petcock.....you better get it before the rush and they run out of them.  The folks at Yamaha are probably trying to figure out why they are selling so many darn petcocks....maybe even wondering why so many are failing and have to be replaced (They don't have a clue that it is a Suzuki issue that Yamaha is solving.)

Ya done good, Row. That can only expand the level of awareness these little bikes exist. Just getting them mentioned & that there are easy fixes for little nagging design shortcomings can only pique the interest of the readers. If you could get him to make mention of the Verslavy in another issue, thatd be cool. Wouldnt it be great if suzuki saw enough interest in the bike to justify doing some re-design work?
What would I wanna see?
Ditch that chrome trash can of a muffler & put Dynas on.
fix the tensioner so it doesnt just rip thru the life of the chain.
IMO, the teeth are too close together & the mount itself ( Im just now chewing on this, so, if its laffably moronic, give me a break, it just popped in my head, I havent sat & contemplated how things would have to work, it may be a mechanical impossibility, IDK yet) mite possibly be allowed to absorb a few millimeters of travel. I just cant help but believe
theres a way to change the way the tensioner works that would increase the life of the chain tremendously. Seeing these guys report their tensioner is on its last mm with just over 12,000 miles is just not cool.
The unpredictability of it is a problem. Variables that I see , in order of
%age of impact on wear rate (* based on MY best S.W.A.G.) are
Number of warm up/cool down cycles per mile driven.
I see that as The Number One cause of premature chain wearing.
I know hard acceleration means that chain has to yank that cam speed up
so, thats gotta increase wear at the pins.
Letting it sit long enough for oil to drain out of pressure points cant be good, but thats only gonna happen once a year.
choice of oil? Yea,, maybe, but if youve got an oil thats good enough for the valve train, its good enough for that chain, Id bet.

* S.W.A.G. is Scientific Wild A55 Guess. Got me 1/2 credit on a test question in Chemistry in college.
Question was,, given 2 elements ( one acid, one base) we were supposed to calculate the %age of completeness of reaction, based on
how they would react to one another due to their electrons in the outer shells. Heck, man,, I couldnt do the math, but I could see it was gonna be a pretty hot reaction, not explosive, but pretty quick, &, of course
Show your work was part of the ?,,, so, I guessed at it (70%, says I)
& put SWAG method in the work space. Prof asked me up to explain,, I was within 1% on the answer,, & he gave me a break,,

Can you honestly believe that you would ever see the Bot on a Harley Dresser?

LOL,... I would post the pic this morning but she rode it to work, i'll post a couple when she gets home this evening. She likes her savage a lot and i'm happy that we have one more thing in common to share.
I never realized she enjoyed riding so much that at the age of 50 she would want to learn and twist the throttle herself....just awesome.
We used to ride our bicycles around town together, now we ride our motorcycles around the county together.....she wants to try a long distance over the weekend type ride....guess i'll have to get mine soon.

Pics as promised, but a week late.
Bought a Slip Steam.inc windscreen off of ebay from Harber's Cycles

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b471/Orphistle/DSCF2034.jpg

Had to modify the mounts arms (cut off bottom bend and about 10") to fit the bars.

The windscreen is the Hellfire by Slipstreamer, I picked it up for $105
the mirrors I got from the same dealer Harber's Cycle, for $29.95 they are 4.25" by 6.25"
