I bought the trail tech Vapor from a fellow member... what is the correct settings to get the tach right?? It currently reads 2 -4000 at idle...

Is the rpm jumping around and not reading steady.  If so you need to solder a resistor into the tach lead.  Send me an email with your address....and I can mail you one.

Thanks Dave... But I just set this up and I want to be sure I am doing right before adding other variables:

This is from the set up manual:
Every time the engine revolves it sends a pulse to Vapor, letting it
know how fast the engine is turning. The number of ignition pulses
per revolution will vary across different engine types. Select from 0.5,
1.0, or 2.0 PPR. This setting is critical.
USE AS DEFAULTS:
MODIFY FLASHING DIGIT BY PRESSING
CHANGE TO NEXT DIGIT BY PRESSING
TO CONFIRM, PRESS
Vapor will go to the next setting.
Program Pulses per Revolution (PPR)
Step 1:
4 Strokes: 1 PPR

For most vehicles, press MODE to continue. Some vehicles change
PPR over a certain RPM. For these vehicles, change the displayed
RPM digits to the RPM at which the vehicle changes PPR.

This screen will appear if a number other than zero is entered in
previous step.
Vapor will flash the default number “1.0”. Typically, a vehicle that
changes PPR ratio at higher RPM’s changes from 0.5 to 1.0. Consult
your bike’s User Manual or the manufacturer for details.


At first i was at .0 , bur the RPMs were waaay high, then 1 which dropped them, and now at 2. The second and third setting are not set.

But now the readings are not going up nor do they seem reflective what the bike is doing. They start at 15 or so,, and bounce to 2.. maybe 3 but not higher and return to under most times.

i had it set at 1.0 PPR

how are you hooking up the wire i had it wrapped around the spark plug wire about 8 times and it worked good you might have to wrap the wire 1 or 2 times more or less to get it right. every bike is diff.

make sure you have a good ground on the ground wire or it will not read right.

if you have the wire on the coil wire that feeds the coil you have to put a resistor in it for it read right

I have both settings at 1.  I have the wire hooked up to top coil primary wire, which is the one from the igniter module.  At frist the thing bounced all over the place  for rpm.....and when I used the turn signals it would spike the rpm's and trigger the shift and red line lights.  When I soldered in the 470K ohm resistor it all settled down and now it works great.

yes I saw where it looked like the red wire had a slight "coil" to it and I assumed you just wrapped it.. so that's what I did. I only have about 5 wraps though .. which after reading again seems to be a minimum. I will go back and re-do it.

If that isn't satisfactory.. I will take you up on your generous offer Dave.
