Title: Blue pipes
Post by Toroso on 07/10/13 at 12:17:44

This bike I just bought has some bluing on the header pipe as well as the muffler. Is this normal for 19,500 miles? Can it be polished off/out?

It is a badge of honor. Besides, blue is a pretty color.

Our pipes blue if the mixture is too rich, too lean, or just right. Our pipes blue if we idle for more than a nanosecond. They also blue if the weather is hot or cold. I guess what I am trying to say is even if you clean it up, it will be back. :)

If you want to polish it out, BlueJob is the stuff to get.

BlueJob will take it off but you got to rub like heck for a while.

While my pipe was not blue, it was a nice gold color. I took it off with blue job and it hasn't come back. I have re-jetted also, :)

I'm gonna have to learn about this jetting business. Fooling with the carb frightens me.  :o

It shouldn't... 4 steel philips head screws that you throw away and replace with stainless steel allen head versions. They are cheap. 2 hollow brass screws inside the carb body, come out with a flathead screwdriver, or if they are really stuck/rotten, a small easy-out. Couple bucks per jet from Harley Davidson, you need the Mikuni large round style (HD usually has them, Suzuki usually has to order them).

Nothing to it unless you decide to monkey with the white spacer, air jets (don't bother, it's a CV carb, they suck), needle clip and spring positions...

Air/fuel mix screw and the jets above the float are simple, anything in the top end of the carb, leave alone. Too easy to tear a slide diaphragm.

The main jets in the BS40 for the savage is large round for the main. Thats what came in mine. The small round may screw in there but I was told on this form to use the large round. And they matched what was in there.
