Title: can I run another muffler without touching carb?
Post by nick3501 on 06/30/13 at 21:37:32

bone stock 97 savage, the factory baffle has developed that really irritating whistle and Im ready to get rid of it. Question is, can I get a bolt on pipe like a harley dyna and get away without re-jetting?

If you keep the stock air filter,... you can probably get by with a full baffled, stock Harley shorty...
It will sound great, save you 10lbs of ugly fat, and make you irresistible to women...
It won't give the same performance gain, as adding a filter and doing a rejet...
You can't have everything.... unless you do everything... ;)...

I run a HD sporty slip on on mine and didnt rejet... it turns heads and sets a few car alarms off from time to time :)

I swapped out for a HD Dyna muffler and didn't have to rejet. I don't know if having a longer exhaust had anything to do with it or not, I did wind up doing the spacer mod which made things smoother but didn't touch the jets at all.

I'm so happy with the sound and feel of the bike now.  :D

I put on a after market muffler without touching the carb. It worked just fine. ;)

Someone told me that stock Harley mufflers are fairly quiet. That harley owners take them off immediately and replace with aftermarket. I'm sure they're louder than our stock but is it that noticeable?

im gonna recommend a Jardine,... they are LOUD id probably say louder than a dyna.  they run about $175 from dennis kirk, im switching to that over the winter.   i got a lot of flack from the harley camp bc my sporty pipe has " Harley Davidson" stamped into it... you might wanna keep your stocker handy for state inspection though depending on  if your state has noise decible laws.  I know here in new york the cops dont really bother the few people i know that have them, just a suggestion though ;)

Really? Phhhht,, Who cares?
Before you dump that $$$ into a Jardine, understand you will be jetting & its not as easy to jet for that pipe.,drop 20 bux, slap a dyna on. no one will hate you for the noise,

oh i forgot to mention i renamed the Harley Owners Group the Haters Only Group... i cant help it if theyre jealous of the fact that their overpriced bling sounds better on a 27 year old thumper than an '07 Fatboy  ;D

Yes. HARFXS1584  #65842-07  Bolts on in one hour total with no special adapter or clamp. Uses stock muffler bracket. Serowbot posted photos in Technical Forum under mufflers. BTW, they fit Night Train. Mine was $30. Boofer  :)

Here is one for $ 40.49 and free shipping.  If you watch eBay you can find these for $ 30 - $ 40 that are in great shape.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Harley-Davidson-FXD-1340-1450-Dyna-Glide-Exhaust-Pipe-Muffler-65747-94-/130829620316?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e760d945c&vxp=mtr

If you put a free add in Craigslist that you are looking for DYNA mufflers you might find something.  I had a guy contact me and would sell me his for $ 15 each.

I personally think the fitment is better with an angle adapter like the one you can buy from RYCA.

Dave, I agree with you on your muffler, but mine bolts straight on with no offset. The only work is to grind off the front threaded screw boss so the back can snug close to the stock muffler bracket. I went to a guy who works on HDs out of his garage. His wife took me to a PILE of mufflers and wouldn't quit looking until I had one that was perfect. Stock clamp, 1/4-20 bolt, and a JC Whitney heat guard to cover the ugly joint. I used two wraps of a Dr Pepper can as a gasket and did not cut slots in the muffler. I'll look for a photo, but I hate it. Not good at pics.  >:(

Not a close up, but my close ups were too close. This muffler is not loud. Hope this helps you. I turned my "sealed off" screw a little. No problems in around 10,000 miles.  :)

Thanks for the info fellas.

I was getting ready to ask the same question.
Just made an offer on ebay for one.

I didn't realize you could change out just the end piece of the muffler, I thought you have to change the entire pipe.

Did you have to make any type of gasket / fitting to make the dyna fit
The pipe or did the diameters match?

The supertrapp needs no rejetting unless you run more than 8 discs. But unless you find one on Ebay used expect to pump out $300 or more!  Great muffler with a deep throaty sound and a increase in performance but they are expensive.

By the way, I read where Supertrapp bought out the Jardine line of mufflers
