I totally respect that hunter for not just blasting the bear, nice to see such respect for just a curious animal. That being said I probably would have needed a new pair of shorts and would have been ready to pull the trigger at any moment myself :o

That made the "Bear Alert" segment on our local Fox station. We "don't have bears (or panthers)" in west Tn... wink wink nudge nudge... tell that to the ones that have been filmed locally.

Black bears if well fed tend to be harmless most of the time. I grew up around them in the mountains of WA. Ignore them, they'll usually give you a sniff or two and move on.

Attacks by North American black bears on humans are rare, but they appear to be rising as the human population of the United States and Canada increases, new research finds.

About 86 percent of fatal attacks occurred since 1960, and were more likely to occur in Canada and Alaska, where people are more likely to come into contact with bears.

NOw, is the population in Canada & Alaska growing at a rate commensurate with the rate increase of maulings?
If Not, then its just Possible that the Bear population is growing a bit more than the writer would have you believe. At first blush, the writer seems to be placing the increase solely on the evil humans //

Down here in the panhandle the blackbear problem is really starting to get bad, due to the increase in housing over the last 6yrs. We never gave the animls time to find a new habitat area because of so many new housing plots.
Most folks are bringing in the garbage cans into the garage or placing thier trash in lockable cans and transfering trash to the pickup cans on trash day, but the bears have figured that out.
When I was working on hurlburt I would hear about bear spottings every day and alot of folks took pictures for proof to the local county officials. But there is no relocation team locally so most times the officials will just show up and make sure no one has been hurt and tell folks just to leave the bear be it will move along, you can't shoot one here unless its attacking someone or being aggressive.

We just have to live with it, no killing of people yet, mostly just pets and messed up garbage cans.

Well,, If youve got a bear population in that close proximity to people, someone IS gonna get eaten,, BUT, I May have a plan.

Id put up signs making it a federal offense for a bear to injure a person.
In Fact, Id put up signs declaring all housing areas to be
Bear Free Zones

we have bears visit the area all the time, particularly in the summer.
and most of the housing along the perimeter has been stable for over 30 years.

I had a face to face confrontation with a huge grizzly bear and cub in Alaska once. Ran right smack in to her walking up this path in a rainstorm from the river I and my brother were fishing.. To top it off, I was carrying a huge silver salmon over my shoulder. I layed the fish down and was heading back into the river with my hip boots on even if it meant I was going to drown I was that scared. Someone was looking out for me because the only other human for 50 miles around us was walking the trail towards me with a shotgun and bells hanging off his gun. The grizzly stood on her hind legs and was staring back up the trail to where the sound of the bells were coming from and maybe she felt surrounded because she lowered and both her and cub took off.
A day or so later my brother was walking into this small clump of bushes to take a dump and the same mother and cub came strolling out as he was walking in. I never made a sound. I was afraid my brother would come charging out and that he would be lunch for the bears. I know why this guy froze in the video. I was in the same position as he was. Too scared to a darn thing!
