Title: Zip tie tire mounting
Post by engineer on 06/18/13 at 19:16:16

Anyone ever try this method of removing and mounting a tire?

removing with ratchet straps

That seems to suck...
Try Googling "Trash bag tire install"... :-?...

That trash bag one is great! I bet a large piece of Mylar instead would make things much easier, since it wouldn't stretch as much as the trash bag and would most likely pull easier from around the tire  ;)

I tried the trash bag method.....it does not work on tight Pirelli tires.  I ended up with a scratch on my new rim......never going to try that method again.  I use the plastic guards that clip over the rim, some Armor All as lube.....and a bit of muscle.

I just bring my wheels to a shop.

They usually end up with just as many if not more scratches.

I watched that and then several others... some great tips in there.

A bucket makes a good stand, of course bigger the better... so a trash can be very ergonomic stand.

Use cut up plastic milk bottles to protect the rim.

The advantage of the zip tie/strap method was ease of keeping the bead in the center of the rim.  I've used C clamps on ocassion.

I've also went counter to mounting the spot next to the valve.  It didn't balance, that spot was heavy, so I broke the bead, and spun the tire around till it balanced... no weights... cool.

Clincher, or Beaded Edge tyres as we call them here haven't been used since about 1927. It would be interesting to see if the process would work with an ordinary straight side tyre. I'll definetely be passing this on to vintage car friends.
