Title: Harley Dyna muffler install
Post by apache snow on 06/14/13 at 07:16:32

Well I put a dyna muffler on today. I used a Ryca exhaust adapter with the offset in it to straighten out the muffler. The picture of the Ryca is a little deceiving. The part that fits on the header pipe is only one inch so it won't slide all the way to the raised ring on the pipe.

It actually kicks the muffler out a little too much but it seems to work well.

Sounds good. Has a really deep tone. :)

Not as nice as the one Dave made for his bike but works.

I have a heat shield ordered to cover the gap.

Had to add some washers to take up the gap on the end bolt.

I just got back from running some errands all over town. It sounds good. There is a small pop every now and then when letting off the gas and changing gears but not loud. It could have been doing that before but the stock muffler was so quiet I didn't notice it. I hear exhaust now instead of the engine.

It also seems to run a little stronger when I get on it. Overall a good mod. :)

No Duuhhh! Cool innitt? Got a prettier exhaust, ditched a few pounds, better sounding bike AND its a bit peppier!
Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, this is the best mod I know of for performance,
The verslagen is the smartest mod of any,.. It keeps the engine safe from death should someone fail to understand the signs of a cam chain getting slack,

Nice neat job.  I like those small saddle bags, they look good on the bike.

I have the same identical bike Snowman, except I put the small stock sissy bar and rack on mine and have no bags....and I too want to do that mod. How much was it (if you don't mind me asking) and where are you getting the heat shield from? Did you re-jet?

The dyna muffler was $35 including shipping from ebay, also came with the muffler clamp. The part # for the muffler is 65747-94. The Ryca adapter was $45.

http://shop.rycamotors.com/exhaust_adapter.html

The heat shield was $17.99 from motorcycle superstore.

Right now I have one size up on the main jet, 147.5. I have raised the needle up .030. The pilot is stock at 152.5 with the fuel screw turned out 2-3/4 turns. Elevation is around 500 feet. Has a few subdued pops but not bad.

Thanks much.....can I reserve the right to pick you brain in the future when I get around to doing this?   :D

Yeah, but Dave probably knows more about this than I do. :)

He made the adapter on his bike. I do have three feet of 1-3/4 stainless tubing. I was going to try and make one but took the easy way out and bought one from Ryca.

I just got back from a nice little ride and I can say this is the best thing I have done to the bike. :)

Have to agree Apache, I did mine a couple months ago and I love the difference in pep. Quicker out of the hole, and pulls harder in all gears.
The only drawback is that I'm using more fuel. I used the stock heat shield. Please post a pic after you put the shield on. I might want to buy one too!

You can always go to a local muffler shop with a pipe bender and have them make a 10 degree adaptor on the cheap too.  Most folks on the forums pay around $15 on average it seems, I really lucked out and my local guy only charges $10 each time for a 15" intermediate pipe with two bends.  :D

ApacheSnow.

The installation and muffler look great.  The RYCA instructions for the Cafe' conversion show that they cut off some of the header to allow the adapter to slide all the way up to the ring.  It really isn't necessary to do that for the DYNA installtion on a stock bike, and the heat shield will cover all that section of the exhaust and hide it all.

I put a heat shield on today. Its a 2 x 7 inch I got from motorcycle superstore. :)

I used the same 2 x 7 heat shield on mine.
But I also used the Harley heat shield on the muffler.
The narrow neck at the forward end of that shield covered
the longer length of the 10 degree adapter pipe that my
local muffler shop made. (for $10)
You can see that the end my muffler extends 5 or 6 inches
farther back than apache snow's. I like his better.
My muffler also kicks out at the back further that I would like it.
I think that a 6 or 7 degree bend on the adapter pipe would
correct that.

YOu wont be sooting up your brake actuator,

i ended up buying a pair of mufflers as they were the best ones i could find (very slightly used).  i got it to just mate up with the stock bolts and used a can to make a shim.  had to procure a 'harley' muffler clamp and i believe i got it snugged up pretty well.  someone on here told me that if there are very fine gaps they'll eventually get plugged with soot anyway.

love the sound and the look....but where mine sits it might soot up my brake actuator a bit.  i'll have to be mindful to rinse it off periodically.

I think it looks great Todd. I also like the look of the muffler shield. Nice job!! :)

Thanks '87.
I appreciate the compliment.
I have an extra Dyna Muffler and shield if anybody's interested.
The muffler's been drilled straight through so I assume its very loud.
... and the heat shield has a couple small dings.
But they're free for the shipping.

You can get a freeze plug from an auto supply store and drive it into the muffler to replace the drilled out portion of the baffle.

My muffler was aimed right at my rear brakes too. I put over 20,000 miles with it like that and never had a problem. Just clean it whenever you wash your bike and you should be good to go.

I hope it's OK to a revive year-old post but my question(s) are specific to the topic discussed.

I want to add the Dyna muffler and it sounds like I need:

1.  An adapter (angled). Will probably just buy the Ryca shown in the link.
2.  Possibly some additional washers/spacers on the frame mounts to get things to line-up properly.
3.  Optional heat shield.

Does that sound about right?

I'm thinking I may not need to re-jet since I'm in Denver and our air is already thin so the bikes run a touch rich to start with.

How loud is the Dyna?  I really don't want the Harley straight-pipe sound but surely wouldn't mind the bike louder than the current stock whisper.  I've listened to a bunch of the YouzTubez but many of those are inside garages so the bikes sound really loud!
I have an aftermarket pipe on my 150cc scooter and my S40 is much quieter than my scooter  ::)

Thanks for all the help.  Just bought my bike 2 weeks ago and I have the oil changed, new front brake pads, Raptor on my workbench and seat lift ideas in my head!

The DYNA is not loud - it just sounds more like a motorcycle should.  I had one on my bike for a while and I really like it.

Sounds like your parts list is complete, the adapter adds to the price but allows you to mount it easier.  Be absolutely certain that you get a real Harley Factory DYNA muffler....and if you are buying one form California be warned it will have a catalytic converter in it.  The catalytic muffler runs fine - but tends to blue the chrome at the front of the muffler from the heat.  Also be sure that the muffler has not been drilled out - there is supposed to be a metal disc in the center that blocks the flow and makes it flow through small holes drilled in the center tube (baffle)....you should not be able to see straight through the muffler.

Yes.  And you'll need a muffler clamp to hold it to the pipe, probably a good sized bolt to hold it to the swing arm, and I'd do the heat shield for $10.  Good luck!
