Title: Iron Butt?
Post by pebble on 06/07/13 at 15:26:43

There's an Iron Butt ride next weekend that goes from Seattle to Missoula AND BACK in a day. While I'm certainly not ready to spend 17+ hours in the saddle for a patch, it made me wonder if my bike could even do it.  Anyone done something like that with an S40?  The ride goes straight across Washington and Idaho on I-90 (60-70 mph) with minimal breaks/stops and back and is a bit over 1,000 miles.

Think of the Savage as the perfect man.
Once its up there it will thump away all day long.  ;)

Get an Airhawk seat pad fast, that is if you can't afford a Corbin

My butt would need Novocaine to sit still for 17hrs...
...my brain would too...  :-?...

I think the bike would do just fine. But 1000 miles on a savage = about eight stops for gas. Yer gonna wish you had a bigger tank. Or maybe not. On a 17 hour trip that's a stop about every two hours. I know I'd be ready to get off for a bit at least that many times. About half way through a ride like that I'd be looking forward to running low on fuel ;)

Long straight boring roads make my tushy hurt  >:(

Curvy and twisty roads are so much less painfull its worth the extra time it takes to get places  ;D  besides being that much more fun to ride.

I wouldn't want to try it.  If Washington is like Idaho and Montana, the speed limit is 75, which means the cages just set the cruise at 80 and go....and tail gate any one who gets in the way. >:(  Add in some pretty good mountain passes, and you've got anything but an enjoyable ride. :(

I rode from Missoula to Portland in one day. I think by the time i got done it was close to 700 miles. Half of the day I rode in a crappy rain storm and faced strong head winds down the Columbia Gorge. A very long day but the bike ran fine at freeway speeds. I found the trick to riding long distances is to pull over every hour for a 10 or 15 minute break and shake you arms and legs out.

!-90 sucks! If you ever go that way again take highway 12  into Missoula which is one of the best rides you will find and go north to Glacier national park. You will never forget the ride!

They can keep their patches.. Im not gonna wear myself out goin somewhere I dont need to go just to turn around & ride back, so I can sew a patch on.. Im sure not gonna put up with cars rippin along at speeds my bike can barely manage..

Yea your bike will handle it a lot better then your butt!!   ;D

Summer time ride? Forget it, between the air cooled engine and all the super fine dust (St Helen's ash, silt, alkakli flats, etc), the side winds, the lack of fuel stops (unless you really like the diesel and urine stench of truck stops)... I used to make runs all over eastern WA, hauled primarily heavy exports loads to Seattle and Tacoma (was based in Fife).

I'd recommend having a bike with a radiator or at least an oil to air cooler for a run like that. And a much better seat, bars that are not a compromise, windscreen if not an outright windshield...

The longest I've done on a Savage (with a decent seat at that) is right around 500 miles in a day. Anymore than 120 miles and I'm taking a full grown bike (I'm way too big at 6'2" 235 for a Savage). Even if mine didn't get a whopping 36 mpg and have a 2 gallon tank...  ::)

A more realistic estimate for 1000 miles on a Savage, with gas stops, nourishment, and butt rests, would be 20 hours.

I'm fixin' to ride from panhandle of florida up to the blue ridge camp and i'm going to take two days to go up there at 530 miles. Just being carefull on the way up to see how the wifes savage can handle it, I plan on doing a little touring on the way back also....wife don't know that yet tho... LOL.

That is exactly how I feel about it. I think if I had to go somewhere 1000 miles away in a hurry I would do the patch but to go and turn around and come right back forget it.

I qualified for an Iron Butt certificate. I rode from my home in Winston Salem NC to Daytona Beach and back in 18 and1/2 hrs. I was riding a Triumph Trophy. I've ridden my Savage over 400 miles in one day. I don't see why it wouldn't do it but those Iron Butt guys are serious and speed all they can. If you're planning on cruising at 70 mph you'll be left behind. The best thing to do is set up your own ride like I did through the Iron Butt Association. 1000 miles in 24 hrs. The Savage will probably give you no trouble cruising at 70 or 75 mph.

To my eyes, the Iron Butt patch simply proves you are capable of mimicking serious truck driving hours, and no more.

You guys want to do something worth bragging about ? Ride the AlCan Highway from Seattle to Anchorage, send a postcard, and ride back home before the postcard is delivered !

It's a mere 3000 miles each way... but I intend to stop and sightsee along the way !  ;D

So... if she's coming along, it'll be the big Beemer; if not, if I have to ride solo, I believe it would be a lot more fun on the Savage !

Sounds like a worthy plan.
When I mentioned your comments to my wonderful new wife, she seemed to think that if I go to Italy she absolutely needs to be listed on the itinerary.  "If you go to Italy then I go too".

The longest day I've had in the saddle so far was 315 miles (650 miles for the weekend) so the idea of 1000+ in a day was  :o.  But then,  I've only been riding for 3 months, so who knows what I'll be up for in a year or two.

This IB ride matches up bikes with similar fuel ranges but you're all correct- they'd likely be riding 75-80 mph pretty close to the whole way.  The idea of getting hit by the side winds from Vantage to Sprague at those speeds makes me feel a little queasy!

The longest stint I did on the S40 was 511 miles. I had an Air Hawk II seat pad and the tail bag doubled as a back rest.

Go for it. Take plenty of oil and top it up at each stop. Mine would consume oil at sustained highway speeds.

Good hunting

Yall are insane..

I am good for 75 miles @ 55mph. That's round trip to local park on the Natchez  Trace. I "thought about" a 75 mile round trip next "casino" town, but a buddy called and we just did beer locally. (I am not much of a gambler..bores the crap out of me)

If you ran 75 or 80 from Seattle to Missoula and turned around, you'd grenade it coming back up Ryegrass... I had a turned up 14L Peterbilt that couldn't pull that road w/o some serious downshifting for even a light load. 525hp/1850 torque, 15 speed trans. I scattered the insides of a KZ750B (twin) on Ryegrass in the early 90s.

Theres a road in West Texas, cant remember where, Its not a high hill, really, its just a LOoooong grade. An 80,000 pound 5 speed Mack truck barely made it. My boss knew the road & told me to be ready to get out. He said to get it wound out in 5th as much as I could & hit it runnin as hot as I could & be ready to start shifting down & he was right, When I crested that hill I had the door open & was sitting on the edge of the seat with my leg stretched across to the Long Pedal.. I could have easily walked next to that truck at that speed.
