Title: about to install verslavy - quick question
Post by strang on 06/06/13 at 04:34:56

on my verslavy tensioner there is a folded zip tie that essentially holds the plunger in place. When you take it out you can move the plunger in or out more. What position should the plunger be in? All the way in?
bike is at 4000miles.
Was going to use the outer hole as well - is this correct?
This is what it looks like now:

plunger is just a notch or two from all the way in.
pop it into the bike as it is?
or do you have to adjust it in situ?
sorry these are probably all dumb questions but the verslavy isn't in the haynes  ;)

Leave the plastic zip tie in place until the tensior is bolted into the bike.

Then when it is all bolted in place....take out the tie.  The tensior will self adjust into place....you don't need to do anything.

If you chain has streteched enough to allow you to use the outer hole without bottoming the tensioner all the way in.....then use the outer hole.

IIRC...

You pop the Verslavy in as yoy see it, then you fit the chain slide (whatever you call that big curvy thing the cam shain slides onto) to the inner hole, and cut the zip tie to free the verslavy and allow it to do its job.

Only once the plunger is all the way out, and it is held in place by the pin which has to extend all the way and rests at the end of the slot... should you compress the whole assembly, ziplock it shut, readjust the chain slide to the outer hole, and cut the zip tie again.

Izzat OK ?  ;)

Which hole will be determined by the cam chain.

thanks this is really helpful - i didn't really understand the tensioner mechanism but now i do.
What's the ballpark mileage to go the to second hole?

Depends on the ballpark average length of ride. Id say around 15,000 would be about right,

sorry verslagen what do you mean jun2?

and you cant get anything, only consumables- filters, gaskets, cam chain, oil seal and one or too other little things but thats it, no tensioners or engine parts, no drive pullys, belts, exhausts, you can only get stuff like that if someone is breaking a bike......

Na its more if something goes wrong with the bike, its good to know that you can get parts off the shelf, especially if its your only machine, say i blow a hole in the piston, i have to wait for parts to arrive from america etc, were as if it was a yamaha virago one telephone call and id have parts the next day.

But i do love these bikes, i mean i have a tattoo of my old girl.......

Did it! I was quite apprehensive as I've never opened opened up a clutch cover before but it went pretty smooth.
With a bit of time and pondering it was quite easy as wrenching goes. Verslagen's instructions are very helpful and there aren't really any pitfalls if you follow them.
Only thing concerning was that my spring pin ended up being quite close to end of travel - so does this mean my chain is already quite worn?
I'd say the pin has about 8mm before meeting the end of its travel. I figured I'd just keep it in the inner hole and look at it again next oil change. This sound right?
I have a good feeling tonight after doing this to my savage  :)

Post by verslagen1 on 06/11/13 at 13:35:48

8mm is at about 8,000 miles

yes, I would've done the same.
It would've been a little tight to go to the second hole.

Is that much tensioner pushing out strange for a bike with 4300 miles?

When we got our 06 it had 15,000K on the clock and the adjuster was out at 19mm.

with the guess of 8,000 more, that'll put you at 12,000 give or take.
That's short, but not terribly short.  We've see some at 8,000.

I work as a tutor and go to students houses, normally very close to each other, so many short rides. Typically ride about 5 miles to an area and then do 4 short hops of a 1/2 mile to each student and then 5 miles home. Do this 5 days a week. Is this causing a lot of wear? I usually start her up and then put helmet and gloves on to let it warm up/oil circulate. Maybe I should consider more frequent oil changes than the recommended 3,500 miles with my riding?

Its not the oil. When the engine heats up it gets longer from crank to cam, when it cools, it gets shorter, KInda long typing.. but, heat up & cool
down cycles seem to play a big role in the rate the tensioner comes out,
IF I was keepin mine Id be gettin rid of some of the teeth in that thing,,
