Post by rfbznb on 06/04/13 at 17:45:32

i think i blew it up today

I was going down the highway after work today and it started making a rattling sound and then I seen the blue smoke.

riding this summer might be over for me

Yup,.. you're boogered...
That's oil...

How fast were you going?...

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by rfbznb on 06/04/13 at 17:58:07

I was doing about 80 for about 25 miles.

im just glad it did not lock up on me

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by verslagen1 on 06/04/13 at 18:01:32

probably a burnt piston

take it apart, get it bore and put a wiseco in.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by rfbznb on 06/04/13 at 18:05:50

I just did bore it and put a wiseco piston in it I only have 1820 miles on it I just put $900 in the motor over the winter

Post by pgambr on 06/04/13 at 18:13:56

Sorry to here about your troubles.  Does it really cost that much to bore it out?

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by rfbznb on 06/04/13 at 18:17:43

no
I put a new piston. timing chain, everything new for the clutch. every gasket, oring and oil seal on the motor. new rocker arms valve seals.
everything in side is new

That's a tough one after spending all that time and money.  Sorry to hear that.  Compression sounds OK, wonder if the oil is coming from the top end?

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by pgambr on 06/04/13 at 18:22:14

Sorry to hear that, alot of hard work.  I'm not familiar with a burnt piston.  Could someone paint a picture?

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by rfbznb on 06/04/13 at 18:29:33

im not sure if im going to fix it or sell it or part it out.
I do 70 miles of highway a day so im thinking maybe I need a bigger bike.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by paulmarshall on 06/04/13 at 18:47:43

If it were me I would pull it down first and see whats happened.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by zx250r on 06/04/13 at 19:10:49

who did the work?

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by rfbznb on 06/04/13 at 19:13:47

I did all the work myself.
but I did not bore the cylinder.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by LANCER on 06/04/13 at 21:48:24

I would want to tear it down and see what happened.
Still has some compression ?
Perhaps it's a broken ring.

The bike being to small to ride one the highway is not the problem; something broke in the engine, that is the issue

Yes I agree with Lancer more like a ring damaged during installation.
I paid a professional to do that bit.

I agree with Lancer. European big singles have been cruising at those speeds (well... almost...) since the 1950's.

Current big single enduros (dualsports) WILL rev much harder and higher than the Savage.

It could well be a broken piston ring.
Depending on how much the broken piston ring scored the cylinder, you may need a simple hone (=1 thou") or you may need it rebored again by a few thou".

In any case you WILL need to fit a new set of rings AND you should have RUN IN your rings and piston anyway.

May I suggest you slow down to 60-ish and enjoy the scenery, 35miles each way at 60mph will require 35 minutes but fuel and OIL economy will greatly improve!
(as compared to 35 miles at 80mph = 29 minutes... is it really worth saving those 5-6 minutes?)

IMO, if you think you have to do 80 mph for more than a few minutes, you need a bike w/ more cu inches.
At 80 mph, even flat ground and no headwind, there is very little manifold vacuum, which in my experience is a meltdown waiting to happen.

I don't have a complete set of data.....but I have been riding for a few weeks with a Vapor Speedo/Tach that has a temperature sensor on the head.  At 50 mph the head temperature is around 250 degrees F, at a steady 65 mph it approaches 290 degrees.  I will never know what the head temperature is after doing 80 mph for 25 miles....but I bet it is high!

Was the bike low on oil?

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/05/13 at 05:59:19

Drain the oil into a clean, non metallic bucket. Sweep thru w/ a magnet & see if youve got "junk".

Check compression.
Do a leak down.
Hope for a valve seal.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by Routy on 06/05/13 at 12:44:28

I have seen many oil burners that had been overheated. And upon teardown, have found no damage other than piston rings that have lost nearly all their spring tension, meaning that they no longer hold proper tension against the cylinder walls. This is very likely what has happened. And this is where a slight honing and a new set of std rings can make a like new engine.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/05/13 at 17:52:49

Leak down test will help diagnose such, right?

Yes, but I suppose it is possible for the compression rings to hold a leakdown test, but still have a faulty oil ring ? But combustion chamber overheating would likely ruin the top rings first, and maybe the valve seals first.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/06/13 at 05:05:04

Id sure have to sweep thru the oil w/ a magnet & do an autopsy on the filter,, WHY? Heck, Man, thats just how I do things.,.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by Dave on 06/06/13 at 05:13:39

OK.....I am ready for the autopsy to begin.  On a trwo stroke this anaylysis is easy....pull the muffler and look at the exhaust side of hte piston and see if the piston is scored.  On a 4 stroke it is more involved.

How much oil is in the bike....Was it low on oil?.
Drain the oil and see what kind of metal might be in there.
Do a compression check.
Pull the head cover and look at the valve seals?
But I believe the real issues won't be known until the cylinder is pulled.

Don't forget to post pictures....so we can all learn sumptin.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by WD on 06/06/13 at 05:20:10

652cc mosquito fogger... ouch. With any luck it just blew a valve seal and piston rings.

I can't get that lucky. Put a Barnett carbon fiber clutch in the 1500 Drifter on Tuesday. Wednesday it failed. Big time failed, like can't pull the driveway failed. With maybe 10 miles on it failed. I'd take valve seal or ring jobs over redoing a clutch any day of the week.

I don't agree with the "more cu.inches" opinion.

Here in Europe, way back in the '70s and '80s you would see Guzzi V35s, Morini 350s and BMW R45s cruising at 120-130Km/h easy peasy (that's 75/80mph) and they had the very same 32-34 HP the Savage has.

So where's the difference? The difference lies in the fact teh Savage was NOT engineered to be a high speed slabside cruiser.

If "rfbznb" needs to cruise at 80mph for 30 minutes each way, he doesn't need a "bigger" bike, he simply needs a "highway speedster".

Honda CB500 or Suzuki SV650, just to name two.

Or a Guzzi V7, that'll cruide all day at 80mph and wink when you get there !!!

All I know is more cu inches= bigger engine = not working as hard = last a lot longer.
Its kinda like Dr Phil says,.....your way is always the right way, but hows it workin for ya ?? Answer, its not !  ;D

piece of piston melted on the cylinder

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by Dave on 06/11/13 at 12:19:09

THe cylinder imght be salvagable.....the piston isn't.

How much oil was in the engine?  Trying to figure out if the problem was heat.....or lack of oil.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by rfbznb on 06/11/13 at 12:22:20

the oil was at almost 3/4 in sight glass.
the oil was only 300 miles old but it looked old already.

When on the highway how long would you recommend going at 70 - 75 before it really needs a break?  Thanks.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today

I might be looking for an engine so I can being the motor back to stock

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/11/13 at 14:46:50

Ill let you decide,, what ever youre comfortable with,, Me? I know what it can run. One day is different from another,, some days 85 is all she'll do,, some days, 100 MPH isnt impossible,, I act accordingly.. I dont baby it, I run the snot out of it, but,, when it comes to sustained high speeds, I back off & let things cool down a bit every so often,

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by engineer on 06/11/13 at 18:57:28

Earlier you said "I just did bore it and put a wiseco piston in it".  My guess would be that it wasn't bored out to a large enough diameter for the piston or maybe it didn't have a long enough break in period.

Some people put the over bored cylinder and the new piston in an oven and then check the clearance when both are hot because the clearance at operating temperature might be different.  Or maybe you checked all those dimensions and just had some bad luck.

Anyway, sorry you are out all that money and time.

Yea, IM sorry you lost what you lost, BUT,, on the bright side, it didnt grab in there & lock up & send you flying sideways down the road at 80 Malnahr either,, YOu could be one seriously ate up dude or dead or both,.,
This crap will FIX!,, I actually hope you go Total Pig & do it all
&, a total pig is a whole hog,,

Looks like the bore was off. Take to a different machine shop and have them mic it. Then take it to a second one and have them mic it as well. If the results from both are too tight for the piston/ring combo you installed, you need to have a chat with the shop that did the initial bore and hone for you.

A piston scuffing that hard is usually a sign of faulty machining. If the bore had been done correctly, the rings would have held the piston away from the walls.

thank you I think im going to do that.
here is a pic of what the new piston looked like.

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today
Post by WD on 06/12/13 at 14:09:57

That actually looks a bit loose... my initial post still stands, have it mic'd against the spec you should have received with the new piston and rings. A bad bore and hone is still a bad bore and hone, if the machine shop screwed up, they owe you a new cylinder, piston and rings.

If it is within the bore/hone spec range, you're most likely gonna have to eat the cost.

When I got my cylinder head bored I sent the piston with the head. The place that did the job asked for the piston as well as the cylinder. Did you do the same?

Title: Re: i think i blew it up today

yea I sent them the piston and cylinder to them.

I just bought a new bike today the one with the flames on tank.

so im not going to fix the savage.

im going to part out the bike to try and make back some of my money.

so if you guys need anything just message me with what you need and what you like to pay.
