Title: My First Maintenance with my S40
Post by nickeynicknick on 06/02/13 at 14:59:27

So, I changed the oil and oil filter in my bike today. While the oil drained, I followed the very helpful how to in the Tech section on checking cam chain tensioner. Mine is right at 15mm. The bike has 7,658 miles. About 250-300 I've put on since I bought it a couple weeks ago. I saw a formula for figuring up how much longer I had but can't seem to find it now, but I'm pretty sure 17 or 18 mm is the general consensus on changing to a Versy. I will probably be doing that next oil change just to be safe. And I ended up going with the Rotella T Triple Protection 15w-40 listed in the Tech Section, as well.

So far I love the bike and have found this site very very helpful. I'm looking forward to doing some more mods soon. I think the white spacer mod will help my bike immensely! Just have to make time to do it.

Be safe and have fun,
Nick

Welcome NIck, Yea, doin yer own maintenance is the only way to go.
Good goin, keep an eye on that thing & yea, the Versy is the single most valuable mod I can think of to make. It will keep your bike alive. If the chain lets the adjuster guts pop out, it is often an engine killer. Dead. Never to be resurrected. After that, you can pull mods that are fun,,
Right now, if I was gonna chase anyones path down that road, Id hafts look at the fella who is gettin nearly 60MPG,, Dammit,, name escapes me right now,,
Of course, some of the older ( I mean Long Term members) guys have some seriously Hot setups, well,, Hot is relative,, Its a Savage, never to be seen smokin a tire leavin the line,,

Hey Nick glad to hear that you are enjoying riding and wrenching on your bike   :D

I just did the white spacer mod this past Friday, just popped the tank off and did it from the top of the carb. Was much easier then I thought it would be, took maybe 20 minutes with the Raptor petcock (easy off tank with it)   ;)

Whenever you start making changes, take notes and make only one change at a time. I tried the "white spacer mod" on mine, and the only effect I was able to notice was a decrease of about 10% in gas mileage. The afterfire (backfire) didn't change noticeably, and I believe that is because the "white spacer mod" affects midrange while the afterfire happens when the throttle is closed on overrun. I put the white spacer back in and my gas mileage returned to what it had been. If you feel like it you can dig through the notes on my Fuelly entries and see for yourself.

The advice on "One change at a time" is pure wisdom.
If youre tuning a radio ya dont go spinnin more than one knob at a time./.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yes, the one at a time thing is pure gold. I am usually good at that  :-[ . Better these days.

I would love for the after fire to disappear but the big reason is power. I have excellent take off from idle, but there is a gap of no power after that so I end up throttling harder to get past that spot. I have been riding it with the choke out due to its cold nature the past couple days on short runs and have noticed no backfire when shifting and decel. So I am hoping the mod will help that problem.

And yea, after that maybe some fun mods. So far i've just reversed the risers and turned the idle mixture screw out to 2 and 1/4. I am looking at shortening the shocks. That one looks cool. My wife and I are light, 230-240 together, so should be ok. Also want to get some bullet style no stem turn signals and new brake light/license plate holder to remove all the bulk under the rear fender.

Anyone put a tall old school chopper sissy bar in place of the stock one on their bike?

I apologize if this should be a RSD question, but I looked in town for some nylon or neoprene #4 washers (before I got my bike disassembled only to have to find out I didn't have the right stuff to fix it) and I can't find them! I tried Home Depot and local Ace Hardware. I looked online and can order a 10 pack from HD for $0.42 ....plus $5 shipping. :( Does it have to be nylon or a plastic, or can I use metal or zinc washers?

I also just ordered a Raptor for less than 15 shipped(had one for 8.88 but was going to take over 2 weeks to ship...i'm impatient) So I should be able to swap petcock and do spacer mod at same time...if I can find some spacers/washers.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick

Justin, are you meaning the petcock? This is the one I ordered: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2005-2004-2003-2002-2001-Yamaha-Raptor-660-Fuel-Gas-Petcock-Valve-Switch-Pump-/261190693055?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cd02db0bf&vxp=mtr
It says its for a Raptor 660. I sure hope its the right one. :-/

(JOG.....Get your beer drinking slippers on!)

NickyNickNick......

That is a cheap Chinese copy....plastic screens instead of brass tubes, and the outlet is the smaller one.  It will probably work....but is not the original that we recommed you buy.

http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y-5LP-24500-01-00.html
http://www.ronayers.com/Search/N/687/Criteria/5LP-24500-01-00&adv=5&kw..

The original vacuum petcock and the OEM Raptor 660 petcock.  Notice how the fuel outlet on the Raptor is a metal tube that is flared....and not machined like the chinese copy.  The Yamaha part has a larger outlet that the chinese copy....and that outlet size matches the orignal one used on the Savage.  If you use the chinese one....you willlhave to install a smaller hose or use a screw type clamp to get the orignal hose to seal.

Thing is in the pic above...notice how the fuel line is lower than the original petcock. I had to shim my tank with like 3 thick washers to raise it up to and get my fuel out line from the petcock not to hit the choke knob.

Title: Re: My First Maintenance with my S40
Post by apache snow on 06/04/13 at 14:23:45

I didn't have to do that. My fuel line did not interfere with the choke knob.  But I did not get a copy from ebay. I got a 5LP-24500-01-00 from one of the on-line dealers.  :)

So after much searching in town, I finally found some washers at Radioshack. They had an assorted package. Getting tank off was kinda tricky but doable. Yes, the screws on top of the carb were hard but as long as youre careful no stripping. I went with 3 washers. When held next to stock spacer, 3 was half the thickness. Went on a little test ride (to make sure I had everything hooked back up mainly). Seemed a little more responsive after take off. I will ride a little longer tomorrow(if no rain) and play with it some more.

As for the afterfire, so far its gone. First time I shut it off after mod, I had let it idle for a while before killing it. When I returned home just a few seconds and turned off, nothing. So that is definitely nice. Still pops on decel if throttle is cut off

Decel pops are cool... with practice you will learn how to make music with them... ;)...

sure thing! ;D

Went on a 100 mile ride today and bike did good, not great, but definitely better in the midrange. Still lacking so will probably take at least another washer, if not two, off tomorrow and see how that works.

And heres a couple a pics:

I just bought mine on Amazon today. Only $16. It was $30+ and then changed overnight to $16. Had to jump on it. Not having problems with stock petcock yet, but don't want to let it get to that. Also want to make life easier when I take off gas tank.

Here's the link:

I hope that's the right one.

I am not sure.......the correct Yamaha part number is:  5LP-24500-01-00

This is in the eBay listing you linked:

Manufacturer Part Number OCB082-52
OEM Part Number  5LP-24500-00-00

The pictures show the outlet is the machined brass part....and not the expanded tubing that the Yamaha part has.  If you don't see a factory Yamaha Box.....chances are it did not come from Yamaha and is not OEM.

I don't know why its so hard to buy the right one.

I was gonna buy from boats.net but wanted to get the free shipping on amazon since I was also buying headlight bulb, redline additive and a K&N oil filter. I noticed the OEM number had 00 instead of the 01, but was hoping that was just a glitch. I will find out in a week or so  :-/

I want to ask but I don't want to sound stupid, but what does the expanded tubing look like in comparison to the machined brass part? I will look around to see if I can find an example, too.

It's a pic in this same thread...

Nick, what part of Arkansas? The "Going to See WD" thread in this section of the forum is only about 45 minutes from downtown Memphis. Bring your bike... we'll teach you how to wheelie it...  Did it to mine the day I bought it (unintentionally)... ;D Seriously, bring it over, Sept 14-21, you'll have some of the more modified engines on the board here, and the guys that built them. A solid week of riding, wrenching, shooting and goofing off...

Oh, you asked about a taller sissy bar... taller on the stock base (I have a full blacksmith shop and literally tons of steel/iron)... or do you prefer an older style chick stick... like my bike rocks...

You want odd Savage mods, I'm the guy to bring your scoot to...

230-240# combined weight? I clear that on my own...  :o

Here is a listing for a factory OEM petcock that shows a good photo and even an interactive view of the expanded tube.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-YFM660R-Raptor-660-2001-2005-FUEL-PETCOCK-GAS-TANK-SWITCH-SHUTOFF-VALVE-/380664223500?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item58a15b170c&vxp=mtr

Here is a listing that has good photos of a "copy" petcock that has the machined brass tube.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-Raptor-660-Fuel-Gas-Petcock-Valve-Switch-Pump-2001-2002-2003-2004-2005-/321083009894?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ac209eb66&vxp=mtr

The issue most times is that the replacement petcock  with the machined outlet is smaller - and the rubber fuel line is too big for the copy petcock.  You then either have to use a screw type clamp to force the fuel line to work - or you have to use a smaller fuel line and force it onto the larger carb nipple.

Thanks Dave for the links and the helpful info! Those photos make it clear which is the right choice; and I chose poorly.

Here is a link to a real nice 360 degree example of the right petcock.

http://arqspin.com/s/3ryiz1s9yglf2

I cancelled the order as soon as I could last night and I hope it works. Then I will order the right one. If the wrong one comes, I will try what you suggested to make it work. I was so sure of myself that I wouldn't be another victim of the "wrong petcock" issue. So cocky-ness and pride aren't all they're cracked up to be.

Hey......Is it just me.....or do the inlet pipes and filter screens that go up inside the tank  look smaller in diameter on the copy petcock?

WD, I am going up to Fayetteville that weekend for the Bikes, Blues and BBQ rally :( , but I live in Batesville, its about an hour and a half from Little Rock. Close to three from Memphis. And yea i'm wanting to put a taller chopper looking sissy bar on for the misses. Was just curious on looks as the rest of my bike is pretty stock. My cheapo petcock came in but since I don't have any problems with the stock one and I can fairly easily get my tank on and off I am going to hold off on switching it/buying a new one. And same for the Versys. I checked and it was right about 15mm. Maybe next oil change.

I did some more digging.......and I found this:

http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Yamaha/ATV/2005/660R+RAPTOR+-+YFM660RT/FUEL+TANK/parts.html

If you scroll down you will see that fuel c0ck (it won't let me put "c*ck" it keeps saying "thingy" haha) assy 1 with the part number that was the same as the one I ordered: "00" instead of "01"

It seems to me that the part I ordered is coming from this sister site from boats.net

Interesting........and it is more expensive than the one from boats.net  :-?
