OKay, somebody needs to tell me what I did wrong. I installed a manual decompression lever. I noticed after a 15 mile ride that it was sticking out about 2 inches and was leaking oil. I pushed it back into place but I'm sure it's gonna do the same thing again. Did I forget something?
Also, I often forget to use said lever but she fires up right away. Am I doing any harm or just wearing the starter?

I have not tried the manual compression lever system with the lever directly on the shaft - I built one that uses a cable and a lever.  It turns out the small hot start lever I used is not nearly strong enough to pull the exhaust valves open when they are closed.  As a result I have been starting my bike without using the lever....and most of the time it is not any issue and it starts just fine.  Every once in a while the piston will be at the bottom of the compression stroke when I hit the starter.......and when the piston comes up on the compression stroke - the starter cannot overcome the compression and it comes to a dead stop.  If this happens to you, you must immediately let go of the starter button to prevent burning the starter, wiring, relay or battery.  When this happens to me I put the bike in second gear and roll the bike backward untiil I can pull my compression release - then put the bike back in neutral and fire it up!

Bottom line - I don't think you will hurt anything as long as your starter is not locking up on the compression stroke.  I believe the starter can handle the starting process as long as it gets a little bit of momentum before it reaches the compression stroke.  This may not work well in very cold weather - but it works fine in the 60+ degree weather that I ride in.

I am not sure what holds the shaft in place - it could be the 6x16 bolt in the head fits inito a slot in the compression release shaft.  I can look at that tonight and see if that is the way it works.

AS long as youre lucky enough to hit the starter button & have the piston move in any direction & on any stroke other than compression, its the same as If ya Used the decomp. Up, on exhaust, no compression, down on intake or power stroke, no compression,,
On compression its hurting the thing,, itll cost ya eventually

PIcs of what ya did would make having an idea a lot easier

I cant see well enough how its designed to see why its moving in & out.
If a shaft is moving thru a passage, then you shoulkd be able to set up some kind of retainer to hold it in place,

I have borrowed this photo from OldFellow's post on replacing a leaky head plug.  I believe the bolt that is at an angle and just on the other side of the valve inspection plate is what holds the compression release shaft in place.  I believe the bolt will slide into a slot in the shaft to keep it from moviing out....it should only be free to rotate.

Check that this bolt is the right length and engages the slot in the shaft.

There's a notch in the shaft and a bolt in it to retain the shaft.
If the bolt is worn, it won't retain it.

remove and inspect.

Okay, thanks again guys. I think the bolt is worn. btw thought i'd throw in the rest of the pic...almost done! Never would have been able to do this without everyone's help.

I didnt help. If I had helped there would at least be something there to keep the chain from destroying whatever mite get in that front cog,..
